Antidote for Anxiety
Performance anxiety is a sign that you are good,
conscientious worker and a little stress is healthy. But know when you
have crossed the limit and the stress has become counter-productive. Notice
how your body sends signals.
- Delegate Work: Don't be over anxious to
complete all the job single-handedly. You simply can't do it all. If the
work carries someone else's stamp, it does not mean that you're a non-performer.
Oversee the project from a distance, offer inputs without holding it close
to your chest. This way you will keep a grip on the task without too much
anxiety.
- Organise Yourself:Make a daily "to
do" list and check it every evening. Put left-over jobs on to the
next days list and then mentally shelve it till the next day dawns.
- Balance your personal and professional life:
Draw clear boundaries between the two. If you've promised to visit your
friend and you've work pending, don't brood over it. Come in a little early
the next day to catch up.
- Eliminate fear: Construct a worst case
scenario in your mind. What's the worst that can happen if you don't get
the job done just perfect? It may help to know that 90% of what you fear
never happens anyway.
- Create time for yourself: Soaking in a
hot tub can be relaxing so can meeting old friends. Take out time for yourself.
And remember, performance anxiety is not mental
debility. Therefore if you are getting tense about work, let go. Realise
that because you're able to deliverat the workplace, you're earning those
megabucks. You've already proved yourself.
