AN OCEAN OF MEMORIES

The waves begin to dance
gently, slowly,
whispering memories
of bright lights, of sparkling dreams

The dancers grow,
begin to swell
as the music
plays once more, a crescendo

The air swirls, whips around
and the fish sigh
with the regret
of helplessness, of the witness

For it is now that
they emerge;
the heart of the ocean,
the keepers of the sea

The cool green-blue
of the water brightens,
illuminating love
and hopeful smiles

Laughing, smiling,
they begin to sway
as the waves keep time
to their distant voices, their tune

But the keepers soon pause
as the ocean grows dark
stained with past blood
and sorrow

The waves loom overhead
with heavy hearts
and heavy hands
as the keepers turn away

The fish cry their salty
tears of sympathy
watching the keepers
whisked away to their prison

The crumbling metal of doors and bars
floats about aimlessly
lost where it
never was meant to stray

It surrounds the
keepers, locking them
in an eternal youth,
freezing them in time's unforgiving cold

And as they watch
the remnants of their moments
wash away, the doors
lock once more, for one night more

Upon the ocean of memories
