He was elected Vice President in 1960 and became President on November 22, 1963 upon the assassination and death of John F. Kennedy and was re-elected in 1964 against Senator Barry Goldwater. His programs were known as "The Great Society" (civil rights, medicaid, medicare), but he became unpopular because of the Vietnam War and therefore decided not to run again in 1968.
