TCS ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION RECOGNITION

Twenty-three (33% of the TCS middle school) students made up this year's first Environmental Action elective taught by middle school science teacher Larry Miller. Mrs. Gail Franklin assisted Mr. Miller with some of the classes. During the year the class campaigned for leglislation to regulate or ban rattlesnake roundups in Kansas. Their efforts gained increasing support from environmental and educational organizations, plus thousands of individuals. Even thought the group successfully enlightened the public about rattlesnake roundups, the leglislation they sought failed to pass.

During the year the students were featured in newspapers, magazines, and other publications around the world. They also appeared on local television and radio programs. They wrote hundreds of e-mail messages and letters, and they demonstrated on the State Capitol steps. The students received certificates recognizing their dedication and hard work during the Middle School Recognition Assembly on 28 May 1998. The certificates were presented by their teacher, Larry Miller.

Class members were: SARAH SELLERS, KATIE NICHOLS, JONATHAN HERRERA-THOMAS, MIKE HALL, ASHLEY GIROUX, LAURA BIXLER, CHELSEA ARMSTRONG, ANNE MARIE BIRETA, DEREK MOELLER, STEPHANIE MEADOR, MATT LEIFER, HOWARD JOHNS, NATALIE BONEBRAKE, CLAIRE ADAMS, BRANDON BARNETT, REBECCA HOLMES, WHITNEY HAMILTON, JULIA SCHWINN, ALLIE KOSSOY, BREANA TUTUSKA, ALEX STRAUS and ALEXANDRA BIXLER. Alexandra Bixler was enrolled in both sections of the class for both semesters.
