The Latest Buzz : (6/11/99) All signees are qualified at this point except: DL Ryan Bushey, OL Monreko Crittendon, DB Roshard Gilyard, WR DeAndre Green and DE Frank Walker. The absolute LAST CHANCE for ACT/SAT scores comes July 5th and July 12th, with the scores becoming known about 1 month later. Bushey has his test score and is waiting on the final word on his GPA (should be OK), Crittendon has GPA but doesn't have test score yet (could possibly become a partial qualifier). Gilyard, Green and Walker are several points short in their test scores, and none of them could become partial qualifiers because their GPAs are too low. Its not currently known what they will do if they don't qualify. They may go JUCO, to Prep School or sit out while trying to raise their test scores.

DeAndre Green must have an 18 on his ACT to qualify. His best score so far is a 16. His last chance at the test will be June 12th. If he doesn't make it, he would not be eligible to be a partial qualifier as his GPA is not high enough. He has said that he would go to a Junior College rather than a prep school and is looking at SW Mississippi CC and NW Mississippi CC. He is working overtime with tutors to try to raise his test score. He set the state record with 59 career TD receptions. He is considered the prize catch of the AU recruiting class this past year.

Alton Moore (DE 6-6 245 4.7) originally signed with Auburn in 1998 but didn't qualify. He had 15 sacks, 61 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 2 blocked kicks and 4 caused fumbles as a freshman. He was originally placed at SW Mississippi Community College by Joe Whitt. All indications point to him re-signing with Auburn and maybe signing in January.

(4/24/99) QB signee Allen Tillman has qualified academically by passing his ACT. This is great news and will add to the competition level of the QB position heading into the fall. Tillman, who is strikingly similar to Dameyune Craig, will now be able to compete for the starting QB position along with Gabe Gross and Ben Leard. (2/23/99) This is something you will want to read. This shows the average AP Poll ranking vs. Recruiting ranking for the best teams in the 90's. Some teams recruit better than they play on the field and some teams like Auburn play better on the field than their recruiting ranking. Check it out: Click HERE! I will be updating Academic status of our recruits as the information comes in. Keep in mind that these kids won't graduate til June, but a lot of them will be taking the ACT again in March, so check back for qualification updates.

(2/12/99) This is a must read article for all of you, but especially for those of you that may think AU's recruiting class was average. Click HERE to read the article!

(2/3/99) Tigerpath SEC Recruiting Rankings: After reviewing each school's commitments, the number of impact recruits and the overall need met, this is how I see the the rankings in the SEC for Recuiting ..... 1. Georgia ... 2. Alabama ... 3. LSU ... 4. Florida ... 5. (tie) Auburn & Tennessee... 7. Mississippi State ... 8. Arkansas ... 9. South Carolina ... 10. Kentucky ... 11. Ole Miss ... 12. Vanderbilt. Alabama had a great year in recruiting, but they also have at least 8 or 9 that will not qualify, so depending on exactly how many don't qualify, Bama could be rated 3rd and LSU would be 2nd. I give the edge to Auburn over Tennessee, although it is a close edge. I think Auburn had more "needs" than Tennessee, and I think we did an excellent job of filling those needs, so that's what gave AU the edge, but really AU and UT are considered a tie. Georgia had another great year of recruiting, and they needed it, because they also had some holes to fill. Arkansas was a little disappointing, after having such a great football season this past year. What can you say about Vanderbilt? When it comes to anything football related, the Dores seem to always finish last. No offense to any Vandy fans out there! By the way, I have DeAndre Green rated a 4+ Paw, because when I originally rated him, I took into account his academic status of not being qualified. He will take the ACT again in February, and if he gets a 17, I will rate him a 5 Paw. From an athletic stand point, he is a 5 Paw, but I used factors like academic status, Injuries, size, speed, strength and future competition at AU at that position into account in all my ratings. Robert Johnson is rated a 5 Paw, and scored a 15 on his ACT, but I felt like Johnson could come into the TE position and make an immediate impact, because the competition at that position may be less than at WR. It's all based on opinion, and i'm sure each recruiting site has different opinions and ratings. This just happens to be my opinion. Thanks for reading and War Eagle!!!

Murphy won All-Region honors on both Defense and Offense his Senior year as he had 91 tackles, including 13 for loss and 5 sacks. He was second team All-Region as a Junior. Murphy chose Auburn over Maryland and Clemson. Both Murphy and Dontarrius Thomas were recruited by Auburn's new Offensive Line coach Hugh Nall. Qualified academically

He was also a standout for his basketball team, and he can dunk a basketball off of one step. Samuel has a 29" vertical leap, and is very quick footed. He starts at Center for Hardaway HS and is known for his "big time" slam dunks. Constantly graded between 88% and 92% on his blocking. Bench presses 330, squats 450 and lifts 250 in the power clean. Most likely will be red-shirted. Recruited by GT, GA, UF, FSU and SC. Should easily qualify

Stanford Simmons / / Ashland, Al. (Clay Co. HS) / DB / 6-3 / 192 / 4.4 / Will have 4 years of eligibility at AU. Well, it looks like the 3rd time was a charm for Simmons. Stanford was signed by AU the past two years but he kept missing the ACT score by one point, so he attended the Hargraves Military Academy in Virginia and made his qualifying score. He also had 12 interceptions while playing for Hargraves. Simmons was a Parade All American in HS at Clay Co. This guy was highly recruited and is an exceptional athlete. May play both ways at AU. Original comments : Quite possibly the top pure athlete in Alabama. Could be used on Offense or Defense and on special teams. Recruited by FSU, Florida, Tennessee, Alabama, Auburn and Notre Dame. Currently enrolled

Dontarrius Thomas / / Perry, Ga. / LB / 6-2 / 190 / 4.5 / Tuberville visited Thomas today (12/15) to get a verbal commitment from him, and he did exactly that. I have heard that this guy is a real steal. Rodney Garner passed him up, but apparently Tuberville feels he has a lot of potential. His High School Coach said he has the frame to put on at least 25 more pounds. Thomas had 78 tackles and 6 interceptions as a Safety and played everywhere for Perry. He may play WR or DB at AU due to his size. He chose Auburn over NC State. Qualified academically

Allen Tillman / + / Newton, Ms. (Newton HS) / QB / 6-2 / 195 / 4.45 / Tillman passed for more than 1,600 yards, 16 TD's and only 6 INT's as a Senior. He had 1,240 yards passing as a Junior, and split QB duties as a Sophomore. His HS team ran the power-I running game before Tillman came, but his HS changed the offense his Junior year to take advantage of Tillman's abilities. He also rushed for 618 yards and had 10 TD's on 54 carries as a Senior. Allen has a strong arm and is a dangerous scrambler. Great passer out of the pocket. It's no surprise that Tillman's favorite QB is Dameyune Craig. Tillman is an All-State performer and is considered the top QB prospect in Mississippi. Bench presses 260 and squats 385. This guy has great potential, and may be our starting QB by his Sophomore year. One of Tuberville's favorites. Tuberville has been recruiting him since way back in the Ole Miss days. Has not qualified yet, has a 2.5 GPA and a 16 on the ACT

Reggie Torbor / / Baton Rouge, La. (Lee HS) / RB-LB / 6-2 / 225 / 4.6 / Torbor rushed for 2,813 yards and 28 TD's in the last 2 years. He had 1,563 yards and 15 TD's his Junior year. He also had 84 tackles and 4 sacks as a linebacker. All-District at 2 positions. Don't be surprised to see Torbor play LB at AU. Torbor can bench 255 lbs and squat 485 pounds. A 4 year starter and has earned a reputation as a bruising power back. His AU host was OLB Marcus Washington. He should qualify academically. Torbor is a big time power back that can get the inside yardage. Recruited by Texas A&M, USM, MSU, ND, GA, Mich St and UK. Listed as the 7th best FB by Max Emfinger's Super Dixie Top 300 Bluechips. On track to qualify

Randy Vickers / + / Athens, AL. (Athens HS) / RB-DB / 6-1 / 200 / 4.5 / As a Junior DB, Randy had 57 tackles and 5 interceptions (2 for touchdowns). Randy also had 1,184 yards rushing on 153 carries and 16 touchdowns as a Tailback. Helped lead Athens to a 10-1 record. Very athletic, great speed and a 35 inch verticle leap. May play Safety at Auburn. Recruited by Georgia Tech and So. Miss. A real hitter. Listed as 8th best Free Safety by Max Emfinger's Super Dixie top 300 Bluechips. Birmingham News 5A All State Team. "B" average, will take ACT again - made 16 on first attempt

Frank Walker / / Columbus, Ga. (Hardaway HS) / DE-OLB / 6-3 / 220 / 4.7 / Great athlete who bench presses 300, squats 390 and power cleans 250. A three year starter who has played 5 different positions in HS, including DE, OLB, WR, TE and even returned kicks. As a Senior he had 21 catches for 359 yards and 5 TD's and on defense, he had 80 tackles, 5 sacks, 5 passes batted down and a fumble recovery. He is a very athletic "everything man" or "utility man". Could have a great college career, but needs to gain about 15-20 pounds. Could play either DE or OLB, but most likely will play at OLB. He was also a starter on the Hardaway basketball team. Borderline grade-wise, but most likely will be JUCO or Prep School bound

Marcel Willis / / Jacksonville, Fla. (Sandalwood HS) / WR / 6-2 / 175 / 4.45 / Member of the Florida Times Union Super 24. Willis had 26 catches for 520 yards and 10 TD's this year. 10 of his 26 catches last year were for TD's. The starting QB was injured for most of his Senior season, and so Willis didn't have as many catches as he did his Junior year. He had over 1,000 yards receiving his Junior year. Willis has great hands, and he is very smart. His AU host was Cencade Pennington. Recruited by Miami, GA, MSU, Ole Miss, Maryland & Duke. A 2-1/2 year starter. Should easily qualify

5 Paw History - 1986-1998

The Five Paw System : All player ratings are based on research of each player and what I feel their role will be at Auburn. I use many Recruiting sources, some of which are listed on my "Recruiting Links" page. Other sources are inside sources not listed.

= May start as freshmen. Strong bet to play pro ball and win All-American honors. An immediate impact player.
+ = Basically a 5 paw player with same abilities but maybe his size, speed or injuries are a mild concern. These players still should be considered impact players.
= A player who may start as a sophomore and contribute greatly as a true freshman. Good chance at pro ball and college stardom.
+ = A player who may start as a junior and can be expected to contribute as a sophomore. Most likely to be redshirted or could be a strong JUCO transfer.
= Will most likely be a 3 year player who either starts or is a solid backup, or a JUCO transfer.
= A sleeper or project player who is expected to contribute later in college career.
