Wyatt Earp - A Review

Despite having Kevin Costner as the American folk-law hero Wyatt Earp, (Be warned – I can’t stand Kevin ‘Neat’ Costner!), this movie is very, very good. Originally to have been an eight hour mini-series, this three hour feature does an admirable job of telling the tale of one of the legends in wild-west law keeping, (though is perhaps less successful in making neato Kev look a variety of different ages – early 20’s? haha!).

With an amazingly talented cast-list, featuring Tom, Michael Madsen, Gene Hackman, Dennis Quaid, Bill Pullman and Isabella Rossellini, there are some superb performances, which more than helps to keep the story flowing. Unsurprisingly Costner comes across as one of the weakest links, though still manages to deliver a performance that defies the logic of ‘Waterworld’ and ‘The Postman,’ (that was a compliment, by the way!).

Tom portrays Bat Masterson, (Kev, stop dissing the name Bartholomew, Wyatt isn’t exactly cool now, is it?!), who along with brother Ed, (Bill Pullman), is one of Wyatt’s assistant lawmen. Though not a huge role, Tom, as ever, excels. He’s an expert buffalo skinner (!) and the scene in which his brother Ed is shot provides superb performances from both Tom and Bill. It is also one of the most poignant moments in the movie.

In a recent interview Michael Madsen announced that he found the filming of ‘Wyatt Earp’ to be a thoroughly miserable experience. This in itself is fairly ironic as he gives one of the best performances of his career as Virgil Earp, Wyatt’s older brother.

Never the less, it still amazes me that with the film’s collected talent, Costner was chosen to play Wyatt Earp. Do I think Tom could have played the part better? Easily! Blindfolded! With his hands tied behind his back! Anytime!
