Guilty By Suspicion - A Review

It’s 1947 and director David Merrill, played by Robert De Niro, returns to Hollywood to find himself in the midst of an investigation into communism in the film industry. Unsurprisingly because the man is God, Mr De Niro is fantastic as Merrill and the part fits him like a glove. He plays the role with a great deal of compassion and the audience finds itself totally feeling for the man.

Tom plays Ray Karlin, an agent attempting to force Merrill into testifying against his family and friends as to their membership in the communist party. The scene he appears in opposite Mr De Niro and Sam Wanamaker is superb. Tom holds his own with his real-life icon and, naturally, puts in a great performance: his character changing from extremely approachable to hostile in one short scene.

In situations with his son, his wife and friends in the industry, Merrill finds himself suspected, avoided and even despised. Forced to flee to New York, Merrill eventually returns to defend himself in a stunning court room battle that shows John Grishman for the lightweight he is.

Backed by superb performances from the likes of Annette Benning, George Wendt and Martin Scorsese, among others, Mr De Niro gives a performance that, in itself, will guarantee that this movie is seen as a future classic in years to come.
