Take That in 1991/1992

A new single: Once You've Tasted Love followed and was released around the same time as the band toured the country in conjunction with the Family Planning Association to increase the awareness of safe sex. The single charted at a disappointing Number 44 in the UK charts. Gary said at the time "we're becoming the most famous group in Britain for not having a hit"

The second album was put on hold and TT doubled their work schedule. They were now performing 4 shows a day. A school during the day, part of the Big Schools Tour, a evening matinee show, a under 18's club and a over 18's club. Any spare moments were filled with a signing.

It was decided to release a cover version of a hit song as it would stand more of a chance of breaking through to the major chart success. It Only Takes A Minute was the chosen track and it was originally a hit for a band called Tavares in 1986.

The choice of single and the band's hard work finally paid off. While at a record signing in Stoke on Trent they discovered that It Only Takes A Minute had achieved a midweek chart position of Number 25! When the charts were announced the following Sunday it had moved up to Number 16! A appearance on Top Of The Pops followed and the single peaked at Number 7.

The following week the band appeared at a Radio One Roadshow at Alton Towers to deafening screams.

I Found Heaven was released in August and was accompanied by a video shot in the Isle Of Wight. The track peaked at Number 15 .

The band's debut album "Take That and Party" was released and debuted at Number 5. The band embarked on another in-store record signing. 2,000 turned up in Glasgow , 3,000 fans turned up in London and a amazing 5,000 in Manchester and the band had to be smuggled out of the building! HMV soon cancelled the remaining signings for safety reasons.

September saw the release of A Million Love Songs, a track that proved once and for all that there was more to the band than five good looking lads dancing around! As Gary recalls, "It was tough getting A Million Love Songs released. We were told it was a mistake and that we were cutting our own throats but we had faith in it and we eventually got our own way. The single was released and it changed the course of our lives". The single peaked at Number 7.

The band embarked on their first major UK tour in November playing major concert halls around the country. The shows opened to rave reviews in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The highlights of the show included a acappella version of Why Can't I Wake Up With You and a NKOTB medley! Gary remembers "We honestly didn't know if anyone would come. I remember we kept asking our tour promoter if he thought we'd sell any tickets."

The band finished the year at the top, a place where they soon become acustomed to! They swept the board at the Smash Hits Poll Winners Party winning 7 awards including Best Band in The World, Best Single and Best Album. Could It Be Magic reached Number 3 and was their biggest hit to date. It narrowly missed the prestigous Christmas Number 1 slot, being kept off the top by Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. As Mark says "Even that was something special, we were the only UK act in the top 5 at Christmas and only 2 superstars kept us from the top!"

To top it off, Take That and Party became the Best Selling Music Video of 1992 and it had only been on sale for 3 weeks!
