Fortress -- Reviewed by Mario Manganiello

Fortress, directed by Stuart Gordon, is not exactly the best movie
in the entire western universe but isn't quite as horrible as some of
the Sci-Fi crap that makes it's way onto the screen. Gordon's earlier
works, like RobotJox, are good examples of what not to do.
The premise is that the world is way overpopulated and each couple
is allowed only one child...if you have a second you are imprisoned and
the child becomes property of the government.
Christopher Lambert and Loryn Locklin play a couple, both
ex-military, who's first child died at birth (which apparantly counts
as having had a child) and second child is on the way. Mexico has no
rules against procreation so they attempt to cross the border and get
caught. The rest of the movie is standard prison-flick fare with a little
sci-fi robotry thrown in as well.
Let's face it, this movie is best-of-the-best of the direct-to-
video line up. Certainly bottom of the barrel if you're looking for SF
on the level of Star Wars or The Terminator, but if you're bored and
feel you've seen everything, then Fortress will be a decent waste of
your time. There's some amusing characters (like the semi-paranoid D-Day)
and some decent sets, but unless your standards are kind of low or you're
a big fan of Loryn Locklin, I'd catch this flick if they ever show it on
HBO or TNT.
Loryn Locklin's part in the movie is her usual well acted stuff. I
found her very believeable and, of course, nice to look at. My only
criticism is that they should have taught her to fight a little better.
Karen Brennick is supposed to be ex-military and even computer operators
have to go through basic training...where they teach you to fight.
