Welcome to the All About Horses Page.

Basically all horses have the same 4 gaits: walk, trot, canter, and gallop. There are a few exceptions but not many. Here is a explanation of each gait and a picture.

The Walk

A four beat gait in which all all four feet move independently.

The Trot

A two beat gait in which the opposite front and back leg move together. (When the front left leg goes out, so does the right back leg)

The Canter

A three beat gait in which the inside leg always leads.

The Gallop

A four beat gait similar to the canter, but at one point all four feet are off the ground.

Grooming A Horse

Although people usually have there own routine when grooming a horse, they all get the same job done. There are 5 grooming tools that are essential for a clean horse: a curry comb, a hard brush, a soft brush, a mane and tail brush, and a hoof pick. Here is a list of why they are important and what they do.

Curry Comb: A round rubber or plastic brush that removes dirt and loosens dead hair. You should never use a curry comb on a horse's legs.

Hard Brush: A brush with hard bristles that removes dirt from the body and legs.

Soft Brush: A brush with soft bristles, usually made or horse hair, that remove dust and left over dirt from a horse's body. Also is a good brush to use on a horse's face.

Mane and Tail Brush: Used to brush the horse's mane and tail. You should not brush a horse's tail everyday though. Brush the tail 1-3 times a month and just pick out the tail on other days.

Hoof Pick: This is used to pick all the dirt, rocks, and other objects out of a horse's hoofs. Should be used before and after you ride.
