BATTLE SCENARIOS
The intention of the sponsors is to run this event differently then any event
tried before. The plan is to fight the three days as they occurred with almost
continuous fighting from morning to night. While there will be periods where the
fighting will drop off the men will have the opportunity to sand down on arms and
resupply while skirmishing continues. You will notice on Saturday in particular,
timing will become the key to making things work. While troops are moved into
the fight others will be in reserve and will enter the fight as the first troops
are moving off the field. Troops will cycle to the rear regroup, water and
resupply and then move forward again. This will allow a better flow of realistic
casualties since folks will know they are going back in later. Of particular note
is the Little Round Top fight where some tropps will have to be pulled out and
then sent to the opposite end of the farm where they will start the Culp's Hill
fight. As you can see timing will be critical at this event and troop commanders
will have to be on top of things to make it all work.
REGISTRATION
Registration will be set up at the red barn located the the movie site on
Pumping Station Road. For those of you that have attended events at the movie site
it is where we registered in the past. For those that have never attended this
event the barn is about two miles South of the battlefield. Registration at this
site should reduce some of the congestion normally experienced at events.
INFANTRY CAMPS
The two armies will be located at opposite ends of the property with the Federals
to the South and the Confederates to the North. Both armies will have their own
entrances to reduce congestion. Both camps are mostly wooded with the Confederate camp
having a few large meadows. At this point no brigade camp assignments have been made
however due to the expected numbers it is highly recommended that troop commanders
stress early arrival for as many as possible. When parking near the site is gone parking
moves to the movie site about a mile away. In addition the 1200 cutoff for cars on
Friday makes early arrival a must.
One area of concern is the pond located next to the Confederate camp. This is the
land owners primary source of water for her stock and is OFF LIMITS to all. No watering
of horses, no swiming or bathing and please keep the children from playing around it.
Additionally we have learned from experience that large events often take on a life of
there own because off very late registration and heavy walk on traffic. This creates a
whole set of problems for the event sponsors because it increase the stress on wood,
water and sanitation. To avoid this lets all try to register early.
CAVALRY
Both cavalry camps will be located to the West of the Confederate Camp next to each
other. This camp is secluded and is ideal for security of the mounts. Eack camp has a
meadow area and tree lines for shade. One difference from other events is that staff
mounts will have to be picketed in the cavalry camps so staff riders may want to assign
ranglers to care and picket their mounts. At this point there will be no exceptions to
this rule. Water for the mounts will be from tank trucks with a manifold system. Every
owner should bring a water bucket to water their mounts. No water trough will be used
to avoid spreading sickness through the herd. It is recommended that all troops plan
on camping light since camp is well removed from the parking area and troopers may have
to pack there gear in. No horses will be quartered in the parking area. It is expected
that there will be 500+ mounts at this event so rules must be strictly enforced for
everyone's safety. No civilians, period or otherwise will be allowed to ride at this
event. Please brief these folks up front so it is not a problem at the event.
CIVILIAN CAMPS
An area at the fringe of each camp will be used for those that want to camp in the
refugee area. I would recommend that these folks plan on traveling light for this event
since the area may be limited. There will be a coordinator for each of these camps to
direct setup and make sure things run smoothly. Tighter control of camp setup will help
everyone have a more enjoyable time.
MODERN CAMPING
The event sponsors have made arrangements for modern camping a short distance from the
main site. This was at the request of many people who know that the hotels are full already
and that getting to the site daily could be a major problem. These camp sites will cost
$25.00 to cover the cost of the addition land, and sanitation. No camp fires will be
allowed at this site but Coleman stoves are allowed.
ARTILLERY
While no limit was set on number of guns for the event at this meeting, I was informed
this morning that a limit of 50 Federal guns and 80 Confederate guns will be placed on the
event. The reason for this limit is space available for guns during the various scenarios.
Federal units that can galvanize should indicate so on their registrations. All guns should
get their registration in early.
MARCHES
Several organizations have approached the organizers about marches to the field. No
decision on these have been made at this point. Once again, these type of events add
additional cost in the form of camp sites, security, insurance, sanitation and closing
roads that may be needed to bring people to the site. In addition to the organizations that
have talked to the sponsors there are several others that have stated they are planning
marches but have not made contact. If you know about any of these please have them contact
Don Warlick the reenactor coordinator. All marches require permits and many local contacts
to make them happen and if several efforts are in the works at the same time, it creates
confusion with the local governments and causes delays. Remember, while the organizers are
interested in trying to help all units make this special, the bottom line is the reenactment.
To many side efforts can cause none of the plans to work.
AGE REQUIREMENTS
The age requirements for this event are 13-15 years of age may only be on the battlefield
if they are functional musicians, no runners, couriers, waterboys etc. The minimum age for a
combatant is 16. No one below this age may carry a weapon on the field in any capacity.
Well ladies and gentlemen, as you can see things are moving along at a rapid pace with many
people working very hard to have the best and possibly the biggest gathering of troops since the war. Unit commanders and representatives can all help by making sure our personnel are fully
briefed on the rules and regulations of this event so none of our peopl show up uninformed.
