King's day is the official start of the Mardi Gras season although the participants start planning for next year the day after Fat Tuesday....
In New Orleans and it's suburbs alone 44 parades will take to the streets during the 2 weeks leading up to Mardi Gras Day ... On this day,,, which always falls the day before Ash Wednesday,,, 10 parades will overrun the city and it's suburbs...
Traditional beads,,, plastic cups and doubloons are thrown from the floats and if you're real lucky you'll catch a famous coconut that can only be caught from the Zulu parade which runs on Mardi Gras Day....
