Amazonian Poison Frog
(Dendrobates ventrimaculatus)
Classification:
Anura DendrobatidaeSize: One of the small Darts that mature @ 16 to 21 mm in length.
Discription: Orangish tan arms and legs with spaced blackish spots. The back has 3 lines separating black (Y shape). In most cases yellow but the little guy pictured above was orange. Also can be found in red.
Biology: 2 to 6 eggs hatching in 12 days. Tads are reported to be cannibalistic and after metamorphosis takes place froglets feed on mosquitoes.
Habitat: Found in trees and Bromeliads on the edge of the forest and among small streams in areas shown in red on the above map.
Note: In captivity, tads should kept in individual containers at 70-75C and dipping into the 60's at night. Have been told to change the water about twice a week. Also sounds are from the N. American swamps and not from the rainforest.
