Dyeing Poison Frog

(Dendrobates tinctorius)

 

Classification: Anura Dendrobatidae

Size: Frogs mature @ 34 to 50 mm in Length.

Color: Blue-black frogs with Yellow Yellow-white, or blue-white patterns.

Biology: 8 to 10 eggs hatching in 14 to 18 days. Metamorphosis takes about two months.

Habitat: Found in relativity low elevations of the humid rainforest (0 to 400 meters).

Note: The Dyeing Frog gets its name from a legend that Amerindians of various tribes in the Amazon used animal concoctions of various types to change the plain green feathers from parrots into red. This beautiful frog is common in the pet trade due to their successful breeding in captivity. Males and females can be identified by their feet. See pic below. Also sounds are from the N. American swamps and not from the rainforest.
