Strawberry Poison Frog
(Dendrobates pumilio)
Classification:
Anura DendrobatidaeSize: Mature @ 18 to 24 mm in length. Costa Rican frogs usually 19 to 22mm in length.
Color: There are a lot of color variations of this frog, so many they look like totally different species. The most common is a bright red frog with blue legs.
Biology: 3 to 5 eggs which are very difficult to rear tads since they are egg eaters. The mother returns to the tads on a regular basis and deposits infertile eggs for their food. Have read on frognet that a few breeders have been successful rearing young.
Toxins: Probably the most famous frog in Costa Rica, found in lowland rainforests.
Note: D. pumilio is the most extensively studied species of the dart frogs. Also sounds are from the N. American swamps and not from the rainforest.
