Lee Tunnel Walk and Civic Reception - May 23/24

Lee Tunnel Charity Walk

The road tunnel under the River Lee in Cork, the largest civil engineering project in Ireland, was open for a charity walk on May 22/23, in advance of its opening to traffic on May 31. Thomas Davis Pipe Band was one of the marching groups which led thousands of walkers through the tunnel on Sunday, May 23.

Civic Reception from Mallow UDC

On Monday, May 24, the band was accorded a civic reception from Mallow Urban District Council, on the occasion of the band's 75th Anniversary. UDC Chairman Cllr. Tadhg Curtis and fellow councillors Joe Sherlock, Gerard Healy, Dan Joe Fitzgerald and Noel Connor, each spoke of the band's importance to the cultural life of the town and wished it continued success. In reply, band president Rev Fr. O'Brien, vice-president Paddy Healy, vice-chairman John O'Sullivan and Pipe-Major/PRO Colm Dwane thanked the Council for its long-standing support for the band. A presentation was made by Cllr. Curtis to Rev. Fr. O'Brien.
