Dudley Cemetery, At Mudfork.

This is the Dudley Cemetery--Mudfork

Location: This cemetery is located off Route # 643 going from Falls Mills, Tazewell Co., VA., to Mudfork, Tazewell Co., VA., near the location of the OLD Macedonia Methodist Church. OLD MACEDONIA METHODIST CHURCH....Karen Eagle Moman, 1988

Data from the Journal of the Revered Doctor Daniel Hoge Carr found in storage at the First United Methodist Church of Bluefield, Tazewell Co., VA. and information from his obituary in the 1928 Holston Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, has been used for some baptism, death, and marriage dates most from the old records of the Macedonia Methodist Church at Mudfork, Tazewell Co., VA., reprinted in the Tazewell County Historical Society Newsletter , Volume # 7, Number 3, September 1994.

Dr. Rev. Daniel Hoge CARR was born in Giles Co., VA., on Walker's Creek near White Gate on July 12, 1838, the son of John & Sarah Hoge Carr. When a small boy his parents moved to Mercer Co., VA., (now WV), near Glenwood Park close to the New Hope Church. Dr. Carr maintained a home here until his death on May 17, 1927.

He married on 27 March, 1860 to Sallie J. BANE (Daughter of William R. Bane & Nancy Havens, d/o Howard Havens & Martha "Mattie" Davidson, Martha Davidson the d/o the Tazewell Co., VA., Pioneer, John Goolman Davidson) they had four daughters and one son, i.e.

Mrs L.B. Bratton

Mrs. C.H. Settle

Mrs. Jacob Wall Douthat

Mrs. (Rev) D.T. Miles

Dr. S. E. Carr.

Rev. D. H. Carr served The Old Macedonia Methodist Church from 31 October, 1882, October 1885.

His active ministry crisscrossed the Holston Conference and he will be remembered for being the prime mover in the building of the Trinity Church in Bluefield, Mercer Co., WV., where his wife was a charter member and remained until her death. The church named a stained glass window in their memory and after his death, by the order of the Conference, the auditorium of the Sunday School was named "The Daniel Carr Chapel".

Because so many of us went to the Old Macedonia Methodist Church I feel a need to bring it to our mind. This may be because I have been looking over some of the old church records from the 1850's-1901 to find information about our ancestors.

I had been trying to find the date of Mildred Permelia "Milly" Shrader Tabor's death for about 12 years and it was in these records that I finally found the date of her death, 20 Sept 1891.

Its nice to know that our ancestors were in the same church where many years later many of use would also bow our heads in prayer.

I especially remember the reunions that were held in this church yard. Saw horses were set up and boards laid across them to make tables. These tables would be bending from all the homemade pies, cakes, breads, puddings, vegetable dishes, cookies, cakes, pickles, deviled eggs, pickled beets, hams, beef roasts and blessings. There were no plastic containers in those days and fruit pies were brought in stacks. It was a real test of "correct calculation" to be in the right place at the right time to get a slice of your favorite pie. Mine was raisin or cherry. Grandmother Ocie Lee (Tabor) Shrader would make a stack of about ten pies to share at this feast.

I remember someone once saying that our church even had religious cows. There had been a fence installed to keep them out of the church yard but somehow they always managed to get into this area. We had real "Holy Cows" "Up Mudfork Way". (The locals always said they lived or were going up Mudfork)

The kids had to take turns going to one of the big white homes (Perdue) up the little dirt road to pump water and carry it to the church in buckets where we all drank from the same dipper.

Do any of you remember the "splatter painting" we did every year at Vacation Bible School ?

The Old Macedonia Methodist Church, in my youth, was located upon top of the hill next to the Perdue homes. Those of the older generation (some whom had already gone to be with their makers) as well as "the then living" William Glen Perdue and Callie (Patton) Perdue and their family Shelby, Countess Adean, Wilber Kermy and Ella Yvonne Perdue.

The older generations were:

Father of William Glen Perdue: William Hesper "Hess" Perdue & Bertha Elizabeth Tabor the d/o Elgan Whitley Tabor & Octavia Zane Tiller

Grandparents of William Glen Perdue: Silas Henry Perdue, Jr., & Laura Jane Wagner, the d/o Rev. Adam Wagoner & Juliana Elinor Tabor the d/o FRANCIS TABOR & Mary "Molly" Shrader -the sister of Mildred Permelia "Milly" Shrader

Great prandparents of William Glen Perdue: Silas Henry Perdue, Sr., & Nancy Jane Powell

This is the same church where all the young (1950's) people of my age went to church. Who can forget the POBOGRAM "get-to-gethers"? POBOGRAM being a combination of Pocahontas, Boissevain and Graham divisions of the Methodist Conference for the young people. Each area had to take turns providing a place, food and activities for these get-togethers. We had several of them at our home on the Falls Mills, Tazewell Co VA., farm. One such "get-together" was on a night so rainy it was dreadful. My dad, Darcie Ray Eagle, made about ten trips to the bottom of the hill to pick up young people. My dad had been in a tank battalion during W. W. II and I still think that is why he could drive that old car over the rutted dirt road from our home across the Sarver's land and to the Wimmer's at the foot of the hill. On this night we had a wiener roast inside our house! We dragged the furniture to one side of the room and sat around the fireplace to roast wieners and marshmallows. Somewhere there is a picture made on this night. We were sitting at a big round claw footed table playing "Rook".

10. MARY "MOLLY/POLLY" (SHRADER) TABOR 2....b. abt 1802...d. 1 Nov 1872, Tazewell Co VA. (Her death record showed that she died at Mudfork, Tazewell Co., VA. It also stated that Mudfork was the place of her birth. That fact is incorrect.

Death of Mary Shrader Tabor listed as 20 June 1876 @Mudfork. Tazewell Co., VA., Cause of Death: Old Age. Shows she was b. At Mudfork. Taz., Co., VA., which is apparently not correct. They list her parents as David & Louisa Shrader and it should have been Henry & Louisa Shrader. David Shrader was the brother of Henry Shrader and he married Rhoda Nuckles in 1802 at Tazewell Co., VA

Mary Shrader was the sister of Mildred Permelia "Milly" Shrader who married the brother of Francis Tabor, Richard Adam Tabor.

Some have her as the daughter of Henry Shrader & Elizabeth Armbrister (his first wife) but if she was the child of the first wife then her name must have been Mary Elizabeth Shrader since, Phillip Armbrister, did not mention a Mary in his will. Will of Phillip Armbrister:

Philip Armbrister wrote his will on June 1, 1812, and died in July of the same year. His will was probated on August 11, 1812 (Wythe Co VA Will Book 2, p. 22). He confirmed the 200 acres of land which he had conveyed to the heirs of his son, George, deceased. To son Henry, he gave 150 acres, being the improvement "whereon he now lives". To his daughter Margaret Eversole, he gave 150 acres adjoining Henry and George's heirs, which was known as the Eversole imprivement, and to be equally divided among the five children of Margaret Eversole: Christina, Catharina, George, Philip and Agness, provided that the children find and privide a decent and sufficient maintenance for their father and mother, Peter & Margaret Eversole, for their natural lives.

To his daughter Agness Shrader and her husband Philip, he also gave 150 acres, part of the plantation, and at their deaths to their children John, Henry, William, and Mary.

To his daughter Catherine Berry and her children, he gave 150 acres, part of the plantation which "lies next to Joseph Davis and Robert Crockett". As there were 24 acres remaining he gave the tract to his granddaughter Salome Umberger.

To the heirs of his daughter Elizabeh Shrader (John, Barbara and Elizabeth Shrader), $200.00 jointly. To his grandson *Jacob Davis, he gave a bay mare and also a full share of the 150 acres with his step-sisters and brothers (namely the children of my daughter Catherine Berry).

To his daughter Agness Shrader, "for her tender and faithful waiting and attending on me ever since I had become a widower", he gave all the pewter plates and other articles belonging to the cupboard, all his iron pots, and kettles and the stove.

* Mary Shrader's name is entered in the records at Tazewell Co., VA., as Mary Sanders. If you will look at the record the man (William Shannon, Sr.) who married her and Francis Tabor had only turned his work in once in FIVE years. He had Nancy Shrader also listed as Nancy Sanders. And Amy Tabor was entered as Any Tabor. I found that he made many mistakes in his record keeping. So beware when you are researching his work.
