"So if you hear, 'The sky is blue. The earth is black.' You
will do what?" asked Lewis.

"I'll find the easiest, quickest way to excuse myself from
whatever I am doing so I can get to a phone to call you or
come directly to you." responded Tom.

"And then, what will you do?"

"I'll answer your questions, fully and completely."

"And what command will you hear to return you to your
assignment?"

"You will say, 'Release. The sky is blue.' I will then
forget that we have spoken and go on about my business as
if whatever excuse I gave earlier was actually true."

"Very good, Tom. I believe you are now ready for this
assignment. Release. We will reign in the Kingdom of Man."

Tom immediately shifted in his chair and gazed around at
the sparsely furnished white room. He had spent a lot of
time in this room over the years. He turned toward his
mentor and asked, "Are we ready to start, Lewis?"

Lewis looked at his protege's eager face and said, "Yes,
let us start our session today by reviewing your assignment
to monitor the work at the Whitney University Labs."

When Randall Lynch had been arrested by the humans several
weeks earlier, many of the people in the new species had
felt a kind of relief. Lynch was a genius and a loner, but
he was uncontrollable and, therefore, dangerous. By openly
torturing and ruthlessly killing anyone he wanted, he had
endangered the entire species. Any DNA evidence left by
Lynch at the scenes of the crimes could have revealed their
species' existence to the world much too early.

The new species had evolved following a unique combination
of genetic engineering experiments, luck, and extreme
environmental conditions. When it had started, genetics was
barely an understood science and Lady Luck was a major
contributor in many of their early successes. The
scientists were trying to create a better soldier, one who
was stronger, smarter and obedient. What they created was
stronger and smarter, but what they created obeyed only
each other. Eventually, the new soldiers eliminated the
human scientists, replaced them with their own scientists,
and, finally, scattered for points unknown. Yet, none of
these scientists or soldiers had realized at the time that
they were a new species.

For nearly 70 years, the species had been spreading and had
only recently acquired sufficient genetic diversification.
They no longer had to monitor every conception and manage
all of their offspring. Their people now wanted to choose
mates for themselves. Lynch had threatened this freedom by
risking discovery by the humans too early.

At first, the possibility of Lynch's execution by the
humans was a great relief to the new species’ Oversight
Council. However, this changed when the humans tested
Lynch's DNA and discovered the genetic anomaly of a 1.6%
differential. Who would ever have thought that mere humans
would develop the ability to recognize and differentiate
Lynch's DNA as possibly belonging to a different species.

The person known to the humans as Randall Lynch was not the
original Randall Lynch. The first had been one of the 'new
soldiers' created by the genetic engineers 70 years
earlier. That Randall Lynch was a pure genius who had
tremendously contributed to the advancement of their
species. To protect against the loss of genetic material
through accidents, he had perfected cloning. Using his own
DNA, the original Randall Lynch cloned his own offspring,
who would continue and improve on his work after he was
gone.

One problem the new species had discovered was that
geniuses do not always follow the prescribed path. To
ensure the Lynch clones to follow the path of their
predecessor, they were given specialized training that
focused primarily on the development of scientific
knowledge. Too late, it was realized that a more balanced
approach was necessary to create mentally stable
individuals who followed the principles held dear by their
species. The Lynch clone imprisoned by the humans was one
whose path followed its own course.

Luckily, the Council had directed the Chameleon Program to
monitor the situation. At first, they had limited their
surveillance to having phone taps and a spy at the Lab
where Lynch's DNA was being tested. This was a simple,
routine assignment. Then the priority changed when Dr.
Coulter called the FBI to request nationwide samples for
DNA comparison. She explained to the FBI that the DNA data
base was needed for full criminal population comparison for
a case on which she was working. That case could only be
Randall Lynch.

The new monitoring job was quickly assigned to Tom Daniels.
As one of the top undercover Chameleons who specialized in
infiltrating the FBI, he was the logical choice for the new
"agent on site". A backup team was also established to
intercept and redirect calls monitored through the phone
taps. The home phones of everyone who worked at the Lab
were also tapped in the same manner.

No job had ever been so crucial to the survival of the new
species. The head of the Chameleon Program, a man known
only as Lewis, took over lead position for this project.
Lewis wanted to be sure that this job did not go wrong. It
was his decision not to let subordinates lead this project.
Only he could do it right. Since this project was put
together too quickly, it needed his experience and direct
guidance.

Sacrifices might be necessary if the species as a whole
were to survive. He named the assignment "Trojan Horse."
Although many others had thought this was just another
random name, the symbolism was not lost on Lewis. He had
studied the human music and literature classics and he knew
the story. He knew that Tom had to be his Trojan Horse,
the peace offering who would carry the enemy within his own
body.

'Tom,' Lewis mused. 'He has always been one of my
favorites; the son I've never had; or the man to replace me
as head of the Chameleon Program when I move on. Now I
might have to sacrifice Tom in order to succeed in this
ill-prepared assignment. Normally, my assignments are well
thought out, well developed and managed by only one person.
This assignment was hastily assembled and developed by an
Oversight Council committee.'

Rarely one to look back in regret, Lewis now realized that
the first Chameleon he had assigned to monitor the Lab had
not set it up very well. The direction of Dr. Coulter's
research was not detected early enough to prevent the need
for damage control. Had she set up the job correctly, the
Trojan Horse project would not have been necessary. Dr.
Coulter would have died mysteriously before she had a
chance to testify and the Lab would have suffered a
mysterious fire. All of their evidence would have been
destroyed. It was too late now. Now, they were playing
catch up.

"Tom, I need you to go to the Lab in your FBI disguise as
Agent Tom Daniels. You will get close to Drs. Coulter and
Parker. Dr. Ann Coulter is the head of Whitney University
Labs and she is the primary doctor working on the DNA
samples for Randall Lynch. Her assistant, Dr. Parker,
works with her on many of her projects and is her
confidante. You will present yourself as the FBI agent who
will look into acquiring the DNA samples for Dr. Coulter.
Also, find out what the others at the Lab know. If Dr.
Coulter won't tell you all that you feel you should know,
you may be able to get close to Dr. Parker. She is young,
pretty, and single. She has had heterosexual relations
before but she is no longer involved with anyone. You may
be able to charm her into helping you. You do remember
how, don't you?"

Tom gave an embarrassed chuckle and said, "I think I can
manage to remember your lessons on charming human women."

"I thought you might," grinned Lewis. "Here are the
portfolios on all of the people at the Lab. Concentrate on
Coulter, Parker, Tate and Attwood. They seem to be the
prime movers and shakers at the Lab. When you are done
with those, read these texts on DNA research. It won’t be
necessary for you to totally understand their research, but
you will have to know what they are talking about to be
effective."

Lewis left the room as Tom started reading his research
literature. Tom quickly realized that he was
extraordinarily tired. He felt like he was at the end of
his workday instead of the beginning. Shrugging his
shoulders he leaned over the folders and concentrated
harder. Sloan Parker looked like an interesting female.
Maybe this assignment would have its perks after all.

"How did the all nighter go with Tom," asked the blond
woman as Lewis entered the ready room.

"Fine. He doesn't seem to know that he has been up all
night receiving program directions to implement project
Trojan Horse. He understands that he has to get close
enough to the subjects to find out what they know and
eliminate all who have any knowledge of Lynch's DNA and its
implications. In the end, he will stop all further
comparative DNA testing on Lynch." Turning to stare
directly into her bright eyes, Lewis strongly reprimanded
her, "None of this would have been necessary if you had set
the job up properly in the first place, Lisa."

Reacting to the threat in Lewis's voice, Lisa cringed at
the vehemence. She knew she had made an error in judgment,
but having her hero, Lewis, point it out hurt. She quickly
suppressed the emotions that she almost felt. Lewis would
never approve of an emotional response. Now, because of
her, Lewis's well-known favorite Chameleon was being placed
in a dangerous situation. She vowed that she would do
whatever it took to show Lewis that she was just as good,
and better, in fact, than Tom.

"Is your phone monitoring and interception network fully
set up yet," Lewis asked.

"Yes, the last line hookups should be in place within the
hour," replied Lisa. "Several of the phone lines already
had taps on them. We are attempting to trace the
originator of those taps. We want to know who else
monitors what the doctors at the Lab are doing. As was
previously reported, these are not your normal laboratory
research technicians."

Lisa hemmed and hawed a little before asking the question
she really wanted to know, "Lewis, if I am going to monitor
Tom's progress, I need to know what to look for in the wire
taps. How do the layers of his programming work?"

“Lisa, there are three layers or levels to Tom's
programming for this project. The first layer represents
the normal layer that provides instructions for reporting
to home base in case of emergencies. All Chameleon's have
this layer, of course. We all know that we receive our
basic commands through this layer. Everyone also has some
capability to remember pieces, flashes, really, of the
events that occur when they are under this command.
Recalls under this command end an assignment abruptly,
completely, and obviously.”

“The second layer is designed to call Tom in for covert
reporting of his findings and to provide him with new minor
minute-to-minute commands. This is a semi-regular report
that he will not remember at all because it is provided on
this level. He will not even remember that his time
schedule has been disrupted. He will simply think that
whatever task he was doing took longer than normal.”

“The third layer is designed for making major adjustments
to his program. This layer is normally activated within
the context of the second layer to ensure that he will not
consciously remember that anything happened. It can be
worked independently if we are already in direct contact.
Working this at level without direct eye-to-eye contact is
dangerous. We can not sense whether the subject
understands or is confused by the instructions. Also, if
the different levels of instructions conflict without
proper guidance, the subject will get confused.”

“Essentially, Tom is clearly aware of the existence of his
stated mission and commands. He has a nebulous knowledge
that he has been programmed to support that mission via his
top-level programming.” Lewis concluded.

“What are the trigger phrases for Tom?” asked Lisa.

“No one but me will know the trigger phrases and release
codes, Lisa. You may be able to pick them up through the
phone taps, but I caution you to not even try that. It is
too dangerous to have too many people think they know the
commands.” replied Lewis.

Watch up to and including where Sloan calls to get the
number for the FBI.

"Trouble. Contact Tom," Lisa nearly yelled into the phone.

"Calm down, Lisa. Tell me exactly why I need to wake Tom
up," Lewis said flatly. "What is the crisis this time?"

"Dr. Parker has called the FBI for Agent Daniels. We
intercepted the call. Tom has to call her back. She wants
to get some data off Dr. Coulter's computer disks that Tom
took from the Lab last night. We are setting up an office
for him right now."

"Very good. I'll wake him. In the meantime, make sure you
get it set up correctly and call me back with the location.
Tom has to be able to get there and become familiar with it
before the good doctor shows up. She is very bright for a
human. She would notice if he was unfamiliar with his own
office."

As Tom hung up the phone he fell back to his bed. He felt
like he had only had a few hours sleep. Looking at the
clock he realized that he felt that way because he had only
been on his pallet bed for 2 hours. This was going to be a
hard assignment. Each one had been getting harder and
harder. However, this one pushed the limit. He had not
had time to recover from the one he had botched the week
before and he hardly had time to skim the folders on the
people he was monitoring in this one. Lewis kept pushing
him to the limit. Every time he succeeded, Lewis gave him
a more challenging job. Luckily, Lewis did not know about
last week's job. There hadn't been time to debrief him.
Tom's emotions had been out of balance ever since the
incident.

Tom got up and prepared to meet Sloan Parker. Dr. Parker
was a delight to look at. Tom almost looked forward to it.
Tom pushed the sudden thought that he might have to kill
her to the back of his mind quickly. He had to suppress
the emotions he was starting to feel. He needed rest or
his control would be unstable.

Watch up to and including where Sloan meets with Ed
by the fountain.

"She knows," Tom said matter of factly. "She knows we
deleted the records on Lynch. She tried to hide it from
me."

"What do you think she is going to do?" Lewis responded.

"She is very bright, very intuitive. The assassination
squad should have taken all the evidence in her Lab when
they dealt with Dr. Coulter. I think Sloan is going to try
to get another DNA sample."

"I agree. We have a guard at the prison. We will have to
make sure he is there when Dr. Parker goes to visit Lynch,"
Lewis said.

Lewis's mind immediately started to calculate the chances
of his success if Dr. Parker was able to get a DNA sample
and the comparative samples she would need to establish a
new species as a proven fact. Over the years, occasional
renegades had developed in the new species. These
renegades were uncontrollably violent. Up until now, the
human technology had not existed to detect them. However,
recent research had used the readily available samples from
criminal records to establish baseline data for DNA
sampling across the nation. As far as Lewis knew there
were only six of these renegades including Lynch, but it
was enough to put their species at risk.

"She got a sample by pulling hair out of Lynch's arm? How
did she manage to get out of the prison with that sample?"
Lewis fairly screamed at Lisa.

"Our man inside never got an opportunity to stop her.

"We make our opportunities..." Lewis snarled.

Lisa continued, "She was just lucky. We were not so
lucky." She knew she should not show any emotions to Lewis
but it was so hard not to when he was so furious. 'Why was
he able to rant and rave when she was not allowed to show
any emotions at all' she thought.

"Lewis, there's more. We may have to set the Trojan Horse
in action. Send Tom in. Parker and Tate called all over
the country directly to labs to get the DNA samples that
Coulter tried to get from the FBI."

"So now Dr. Parker is conducting a nationwide comparative
DNA test. We may not be able to stop the detection of our
species. We may have to switch to damage control," Lewis
admitted sadly. "Unless..."

Lewis thought for a few minutes. "There is one other
possibility. We send Tom in. We have him visit Dr. Parker
at home using return of the computer disks as a cover. If
he can entice her away, we can learn what she knows and
maybe turn her to our side. He will need a little bit of
time to seduce her. If he succeeds, we can gain an ally.
Maybe Dr. Parker can be turned so that she actually helps
us prove that we don't exist."

Watch until Sloan leaves Attwood's office.

"I couldn't do it, Lewis. I was starting to pique her
interest, then Ed Tate showed up 5 minutes after I got
there. It was just too short a time for seduction. I left
her my card with my cell phone number and invited her to
call me anytime. I left as fast as I could so he would not
focus on me as a competitor for her," Tom reported.

"You did your best. This project was set up too fast and
is continuing to move too fast. We are thinking on the fly
here. Instead of causing things to happen like we usually
do, we are reacting to things as they happen," Lewis said
flatly.

"What are your ideas, Tom?" Lewis reluctantly gave the
third level programming instruction to Tom. This was the
level where Tom would have major adjustments made to his
program either remotely or by direct contact. Tom suddenly
gave Lewis a blank stare. He was waiting for instructions
that he did not know would come.

"Did you leave your scarf in her apartment when you had to
leave?"

"Yes."

"Good. Go after Dr. Parker. Act menacingly, like you are
trying to kill her."

"Of course...kill Dr. Parker," Tom droned.

"No! Don't succeed in killing her. Let her just barely
escape you. You are going to let her see that you are a
killer. You will go after her a second time later," Lewis
directed.

"When?" Tom asked?

"I'll let you know when the second attempt will be."

"Will I succeed then?" Tom asked.

"Call me for instructions after you have made the attempt
on Dr. Parker. I will give you instructions then. For
now, you will remember none of what we just discussed. You
will think that you are acting under programming
instructions to kill Dr. Parker. Release. What are your
ideas, Tom."

Tom perked up as if the preceding instructions had never
been given. He quietly turned and left the room. Lewis
silently watched him go. Remote adjustments were risky.
Without direct eye contact you could never be sure that the
new commands worked. Lewis was glad they had been able to
make direct eye contact for this session.

Finish Episode 1 - Return here.

The voice on the phone had told Tom to hide in Sloan's
apartment. Try to kill her, but let her talk him out of
it. Let all of his deepest emotions out. He must
sympathize or maybe even love her -- whatever it took. He
had to make her think that she had caused him to forsake
his own kind before he leaves her apartment. He would let
her follow him. In turn, he would follow her. He might
even help her if she asked simple direct questions, but he
would not tell any secrets of the new species. He would
confirm things if she discovered them on her own. He would
report his observations whenever Lewis asked.

It made no sense, but the instructions were forgotten by
his conscious memory as soon as he hung up the phone.

Watch until Lynch escapes from Tom in the stairway

Tom knew he had stepped over the line. He had allowed
himself to be captured by the humans when he was hurt as he
fell down the stairs with Lynch. He had taken the last
several steps on the back of his head. His momentary black
out prevented him from escaping. He might have a
concussion. He was unable to think clearly and his head
hurt. Now he was captured by the humans and at risk for
being studied like an animal in a lab. At best, he would
be arrested by the police for his attack on Dr. Parker. He
would do anything to escape that fate.

Watch until Tom asks Sloan to pull over

He shouldn't say anything. It was wrong for him to be
calmly sitting in the car with Sloan Parker, but he was
beginning to like Sloan too much to let her be hurt. He
had to tell her that she was now in serious danger. Now
that his species was exposed to the world, the stakes had
been raised.

Finish Episode 2.

When Tom returned from their trek halfway across the state,
he had Sloan drop him at his car by the hospital. He had
to get some sleep. His head was still hurting and sleeping
in his bed would help him to heal.

He had been asleep for what seemed like only a few minutes
when the phone rang.

"The sky is blue. The earth is black."

Tom went blank, then he started his report, "Lynch almost
caught her last night. I was hurt defending her. We went
to the cave where the rogue Lynch has been dumping the
bodies."

"Why did you do that, Tom? You were only supposed to help
her in small ways and to confirm things she already knew,"
Lewis responded. Something about Tom's voice was not right
or maybe it was this whole plan with its intricate parts
all depending on the success of their front man, Tom.
First, Lisa messed up the early monitoring, now Tom was
giving away secrets.

"I don't know. I'm tired, Lewis. I need to rest."

Tom had never made a serious complaint or requested a break
even as simple as a request for sleep. Lewis knew he must
be in bad shape if he actually asked to be allowed to sleep
while he was so deeply under the influence of programming.
"Okay, rest, Tom. Release. The sky is blue."

Lewis pondered whether he should stop this project now.
The news of their existence was out, but would the public
believe it. Humans were difficult to predict. Sometimes
they were so gullible they would believe the most absurd
things. Other times, when faced with undeniable evidence,
they would refuse to believe it. Their emotions and their
press corps seemed to affect every aspect of their lives.

This Trojan Horse project was a damage control assignment.
Maybe all he could do now was direct the way in which they
controlled the damage already wreaked by Sloan Parker's
interference. Maybe he should bring Tom in for a face-to-
face adjustment of his program. He would think on this for
a few minutes. He would discuss it with Mary later.

"Tom seems to be in trouble," Lewis reported over the
phone. "He may have received an injury when he confronted
Lynch."

"No, I don't know what kind of injury...maybe head trauma.
He seems confused, tired, somewhat non-responsive. I need
a medic to go with me...I think we need to approach him
while he is sleeping at his home...Yes, it is possible his
programming is slipping. This assignment was set up too
quickly. We never had an opportunity to reinforce the
instructions."

After a long pause, Lewis said, "All right, send him over
quickly. We can check Tom over, decide if we need to pull
him back in for medical treatment or if we need merely to
reinforce his programming."

As he hung up the phone, Lewis thought, 'The Council!
Would they never learn? Fieldwork requires careful
planning and precise programming if it was to succeed.'
Lewis did not like failure.

Watch until Sloan is finished at the police station.

Tom awoke with a start. Someone was nearby. If only his
headache would go away. He had to get back to finding
Lynch. He got dressed quickly and went outside to
investigate the intruder. As he went around to the side of
his porch he sensed that the intruder was Sloan. He knew
she would not hurt him. She knew where he lived from
having followed him home earlier. He could not understand
why she trusted him, but she did not seem to have any
menacing thoughts. However, she was hiding something. He
sensed something or someone else nearby also. They were
too far away for him to sense their intentions.

Tom called Sloan's name and moved her out of open sight to
a safer location against the side of his house. The others
might want to hurt them both. He wished he could stay
there in his house with her, but he had to find Lynch.
Lynch was a danger to her. Tom had to protect her.

"We couldn't get near him. That Parker woman showed up.
He moved her out of our sight and sensing range to protect
her from us...from me! By the time we were able to move in
closer, they were both gone!" Lewis was agitated. He
thought Tom might be all right but he could not be sure.

"If he follows our instructions he will go after
Lynch...probably to Lynch's cave. I'll send some trackers
up there to follow him on a noninterference basis. If he
appears to be in physical pain they will make an immediate
report."

Continue Episode 3.
Watch until Sloan and Ed leave the van and move to a
location near the opening of the cave.

Tom could not understand why Sloan refused to follow a
simple order like his order to leave. Didn't she
understand he was trying to protect her? He had to make
her trust him and rely on him. Lynch had two human girls
in the cave. Tom did not care about the girls, but maybe
if he rescued them, Sloan would look up to him. That was
important. He didn't know why, but he needed Sloan Parker
to trust him.

Continue Episode 3.
Watch until Sloan leaves Tom on the hill.

After Lewis's talk with the Council he assigned two of his
senior trackers go to the cave to see if Tom showed up. If
he did, they were to follow Tom discreetly. His watchers
reported Tom's arrival at the cave and his trip to the hill
overlooking the city. They were careful to stay out of
Tom's sensing range. They used high-powered scopes and
sound monitors to keep track of what Tom was doing.

The reported activities at the cave sent alarms through the
new species’ community. Preset programs went into gear.
At precisely 7:50PM many of them set their homes on fire
and retreated to their alternate sites.

While Tom talked to Sloan on the hill, the trackers were
recording and relaying the entire conversation to Lewis.

When Sloan left the hill Tom clung to her hand until the
last possible moment. Then he lowered his head and gently
cried. Although they had seen many things in their time
monitoring humans, they had never seen someone of their own
species show loss or strong emotion at the departure of a
mere human.

"He's doing what?" Lewis demanded.

"He's been crying since the woman left. He seems to be
stopping now." There was an embarrassed pause before they
went on. "He is just standing there with his arms crossed
watching the fires burn. He may be in a deep thought
mode."

"I'm going to call him to see if his trigger phrase still
works. Keep monitoring him," Lewis directed. Lewis was
upset. Not only had Tom told her about the Chameleon
Program but he also told her why the fires were set and
where the fleeing members of the new species would go. A
compromise of security this big had never happened before.
He could not take it back but he could try to limit the
damage.

The cell phone in Tom's pocket rang several times before
Tom even noticed it.

"Hello."

"The sky is blue. The earth is black."

Tom quietly and calmly reported that he had watched Lynch
kill himself in the bed of his truck after Tom rescued the
two girls from the cave. He did not mention that Sloan and
Ed had been at the cave or that Lynch's body was being
taken back to the Whitney University Lab. This was
information that this level of programming should have
compelled him to report to Lewis.

"Why did you rescue the girls?" Lewis asked.

"They would be important to Sloan. If she is going to
trust me, she has to feel that I would take risks to help
her and her species."

"Was Sloan there with you, Tom?

"No, she came there with Ed Tate. I ordered her to go
away, but she refused to obey," Tom said flatly.

"What happened to Lynch's body?"

"Detective Peterson and Dr. Tate arranged for it to be
taken briefly to the Whitney Lab. The coroner will pick it
up from the Lab."

"It's probably already at the Lab. We will have to
intercept it before it reaches the coroner's office."

"Will I need to do that?" Tom asked; perplexed by the way
Lewis spoke.

"No! No, Tom you have other duties. I will see to that
job. What are your ideas, Tom?"

There was no reply from Tom. This could mean he was
receptive to the third level instructions or it could mean
that he had no idea what was going on. It was difficult to
do this remotely.

"Tom, you must gain access to Dr. Parker's Lab. Do
whatever you have to do to make her trust you. However, do
not give her any more details about our species or the
Chameleon Program that you belong to. We may injure you in
a few minutes to make her feel pity for you. Often human
women fall in love with men that they take care of or who
they pity. It will not be a serious injury, but you will
not remember that it is going to happen. You will be upset
that your own people are shooting at you. You will think
that you narrowly escaped being killed. You will feel
alone. Seek out Sloan Parker to help you. Do you
understand?"

"Yes, I understand."

"Release. What are your ideas Tom. Release. The sky is
blue.

Tom turned off his cellular phone and returned to his
thoughts as he watched the city. He did not remember the
phone call. Suddenly, he sensed danger coming from someone
of his own species.

"Sloan!" He had to get to Sloan.

Continue Episode 3.
Watch until the Ed walks away from Sloan in the lab.

Sloan had driven Tom back to her apartment to rest while
she returned to the Lab to finish testing his blood. He
looked sad and depressed. How could he feel otherwise? He
had just betrayed his own species to help Sloan. She
pitied him. That was what he wanted, wasn't it? No. Pity
was not what he wanted, but he wasn't sure what he needed.

He had new, unusual feelings about Sloan. He could not
have described what he was feeling. He did not have the
words. He eagerly waited for Sloan, but at the same time,
he knew that she would eventually tell others, such as Ed
Tate, about him. This could endanger him, but being near
Sloan made it worth the risk. He could no longer return to
his own people. She held his future.

When she returned to her apartment later in the day, he
anxiously waited while she brought her test results up on
the screen. He had missed her while she was gone, he had
never truly been alone before in his life. In the past, he
had always known that Lewis or one of the others was just a
phone call away if he needed help.

With one bullet that connection was gone. He did not know
anything about many parts of his past. Now he didn't know
what his future held either. Maybe Sloan could teach him.
He wanted to know where he came from. He wanted to know
where he was going. Lewis was no longer planning his life
for him. If Sloan's search for the origin of his species
made him feel closer to Sloan, that was okay too. She may
only be human, but at least she was there for him. She was
the only one.

She might want to introduce Ed Tate to Tom and have them
spend time together. Tom was nervous about that. He knew
that Sloan was going to tell Ed about him. However, Ed's
reaction to seeing Tom face-to-face with that knowledge was
yet to be seen. Tom knew the Ed had strong feelings for
