Dwarf Tactics

by Troll_Slayer@hotmail.com

These are my dwarf unit tactics that explain what to arm your models with and what they should do.

Units

Dwarf Wariors: These guys are good for killing lower point units and distracting others, because they don't die off easily. If equipped with the banner of wrath(D6 lightining bolts) and a champion with the golden septer of norgrim(+1m, sav or S), they can seriouly kick butt! like killing scrolk, as i once did...heh

Crossbow men: Not really recomended, they are poor Hth fighters and have only BS3, making it hard to hit. and with a move or fire, on a big table, they are pretty useless.

Thunderers: Like crossbowmen, but equipped with guns. They are good for taking out healily armoured troops, because of their -2 saving throw. If you are charged, Stand And Shoot.

Slayers: awsome troops for HtH, with their slayer skill, immunity to psychlogy, ablility to have different weapons, and take as many slayer champions as you wish, they can kill even dragons. Watch out for missile troops and warmachines, they can kill a whole unit of demon slayer before they get to HtH. they are even more effective if you stay out of the enemy's charge path then charge them when you are close enough, giving you a +1 combat score.

Bugmans Rangers: are probably the best overall units, with a crossbaw and 2 handed axe, they are pretty efective, but bugman is not. he is only a guy carrying good beer.

Iron Breakers: are good for fighting opponents with a high S, because of the extra +1 save they have.

Long Beards: like dwarf warriors, but have better stats.

Hammerers: kick ass! with 2-handed hammers(+2S) which gives them S6, and -3 save, they can destroy high toughness and heavily armoured units. with the king on the throne in the unit, they are unstoppable!!

Miners: are normal dwarfs with 2-handed picks(+2S). like the hammers, they can destroy high toughness and heavily armoured units. but they are no nearly as destructive as hammers.

Dwarf Drunks: are unpredictable, they are good if you roll a 5 or 6(+1' to their M, or Frenzy). they also come with mugs they can throw, use the mugs for standing and shooting. and they have good S and T.

Charaters

General/King: With very good stats, and 3 magic items, he is the 3rd best charater(next to the rune smiths) It is best to take the king mounted on the throne, but that costs alot. Use all the runes you can. it will enhance his fighing. usually, i use a special charater as my general.

Battle Standard: not recomended. he is pretty useless...except that he can have a banner. if you do take a ballte standard, use the Master Rune Of Valhalya

Hero: good stats, and is allowed 2 magic items. use rune of smiting, cleaving and parrying for his weapon, and use rune of spite, rebound attacks, which is good if you are fighting and large monster or charater. also give him heavy armour and a shield.

Champion: Only good for carrying magic items to enhance a unit's stats(ex: golden scepter).

Slayer Champions: are like normal slayers but they a magic item, they have way better stats, and have one magic weapon. Also, they have better slayer skill.

Runesmith: The best charater. Use a Rune Lord on an anvil, and give him heavy armour with the adamant, spell eating and resistance runes and a shield for a 2+ save and a 4+ unmodified save. And give him a hand weapon with alric the mad's, smiting and cleaving runes, to give him an auto armour penetration, D6 hits per wound, and +1 strength. Also equip him with the runes of spite, furnace, and luck, to rebound wounds in HtH (like another 4+ save), to be immune to fire and re-roll one dice(save it for a failed armour save or somthing). all this will cost alot of points ( 670 to be exact), but is worth it, i think.

Warmachines

Stone Throwers: are un accurate, but when you hit, you might take out almost an entire unit. i don't recommend having stone throwers for a dwarf army, cannons are better.

Gyrocopters: Good for steaming little units to death. recommend against skaven, or armys with low toughness. watch out for HtH and missiles, though. just avoid eveything. If you can't avoid HtH, and the crewman dies, try to get the gyrocopter to crash into the opponet. i killed a chaos dragon once that way...heheh

Bolt Throwers: combined with a few runes of penetration, the spears can rip through any unit... =)

Flame Cannon: you can toast units better than the gyrcopter can with a S5 -2save D3 wounds AND a panic test, this weapon will destroy or at lest make them flee.

Organ Gun: I think the organ cannon is cheap war machine . it is low points cost (65 pts) and can fire 5 shots at once, and it is almost like a cannon, but is has reduced range, no blast, and D3W instad of D4. this is a cheap alternative to a cannon, it good for riping through units.

Cannon: cannons are good only if you can guess inches well. they ar good for killing charaters and large monsters.

Anvil Of Doom: This is the ulitmate warmachine. It shoots 1 celestial lightning bolt for each power card, and D6 bolts for a total power card. It can kill virtually anything if you use all your lightning bolts on one model. And with two champions, at 200pts, its cheap. I usually equip the champions with bugman's brew(incase the runesmith gets wounded) and a ring of corin(to destroy dangerous weapons and magic armour, so even a normal dwarf could kill a good charater).

Throne Of Power: I don't have this in my army....YET. so i don't know if it is good or not...it probably is.

Special Charaters

King Kazador: I don't have him in my army....YET. so i don't know if he's good or not...

Ungrim Ironfist: He is a demon slayer with 3 magic items. Axe of dargo causes D6 wounds per wound and -1 to enemy's attack. the slayer crown gives him +1T and +1 save. the Dragon cloak rebounds wounds on 4+ and makes him immune to fire. with his slayer skill he always wounds on at least 4+. Ungrim is good for killing almost anything.

Kragg The Grim: I personally like the runesmith i made(see above), but kragg is good because he has his own rune no one elese can have. the rune gives his S10 and is on fire.

Gotrek & Felix: gotrek has only one magic item :( but it is a good one. gotrek's axe always wounds on a 2+ no save and D3W per hit. felix has the blade of leaping copper, giving him a total of 5 attacks. they both have gotrek's doom, which is good, 4+ unmodified sav for anything.

Thorgrim: I don't have him in my army....YET. so i don't know if he's good or not...

Josef Bugman: this charater is pretty useless. he dies in almost every battle i've used him in.

Burlok Damminson: lots of strength and toughness. and he has rune of swiftness and stone. he is only good for smashing up units and warmachines with high toughness.

White Dwarf: the WD is very good. he has four magic items(!). Rune crown of zhufbar, auto rallys any dwarfs within 12". rune cloak of valaya, automatic dispell unless cast with total power. armour of glimril scales, 5+ on 2d6. rune axe of grimnir, 2 dice for each attack and wound, pick the best one and +2S. All these items make the WD invencible(almost) I usually put the WD in my normal unit of dwarf warriors, to make sure they don't flee...

Monsters

I usually don't take monsters for dwarfs, mainly because there arn't any models for them, but you may convert or make a dwarf riding a monster. Also, dwarfs are not suitable to ride on monsters, with their stubby legs and arms, they won't be able to climb on it.... :(
