Theophrastus
Gourmand
Theophrastus Gourmand, a native of the
Brettonian city of Brionne, is the Old World's most renowned
alchemist and also the wealthiest wizard of the age. (Rumour has
it that Theophrastus perfected the art of transforming lead to
gold early in his career, and used the proceeds to buy out the
publishing rights to the Book of Ashur.) He is the greatest
master of Gold Magic in Brettonia, and is proud to have learned
his craft in the native alchemical tradition, rather than by
studying at the Empire's Colleges in Altdorf; indeed, he has
little respect for his Imperial counterparts, referring to them
as "gilded imitations" and "northern
cheapskates". Theophrastus' battle-magic is highly valued by
the Grande Generals of the realm, and he is always willing to
lend his abilities to the Brettonian cause, especially since
providing such service exempts him from a number of otherwise
burdensome taxes on his properties.
Much of Theophrastus' success comes from
his work with alchemical "radicals". According to
alchemists' theories, any element many be refined to a perfectly
pure, "radical" state; such a substance would embody
the element's essential qualities. Theoretically, only element
which cannot be so ampliified is gromril, which may only exist in
an ideal, uncorrupted state to begin with (one of the reasons why
the metal is so rare). Thus far, Theophrastus has succeeded in
producing radicals of several common elements, and has fashioned
a number of items which make use of their special properties.
When Theophrastus goes to battle, he always
takes along a pair of Estalian professional duellists as hired
bodyguards. Theophrastus prefers to rely on his Estalians because
of their great skill at arms as well as their great loyalty to
those wealthy enough to purchase their services.

- Weapons/Armour:
- Theophrastus is armed with his magic
dagger. His bodyguards wear light armour, carry shields
and are each armed with a magic sword supplied by
Theophrastus (it's in their contracts).
- May Ride:
- Theophrastus' earth-based magic and
his duellist-bodyguards' skillful footwork are ill-used
from horseback; they much prefer to fight dismounted, and
may not ride any beast into battle.
- Magic Items:
- Theophrastus always carries four
magical items of his own invention: the Circlet of
Radical Gold, the Rod of Radical Copper, the Sphere of
Radical Mercury and the Dagger of Radical Silver. The
bodyguards each carry a Sword of Radical Iron.
- CIRCLET OF RADICAL GOLD:
- This artifact adds a powerful charge
to Theophrastus' magic, making his spells dangerous to
interfere with. Any enemy wizard who successfully
dispells a spell cast by Theophrastus (via either a magic
card or a special item) immediately suffers an S3 hit
with no armour save, not even for magical armour.
Theophrastus only.
- ROD OF RADICAL COPPER:
- This 3' rod allows its wielder to
channel magical power in order to ground a hostile
enchantment. It permits Theophrastus to spend Power cards
to increase his chances of successfully making a dispel
roll. Theophrastus must declare how many Power cards, if
any, he will spend before making the die roll; he
receives a +1 bonus to his chances for each card spent.
Theophrastus only.
- SPHERE OF ALCHEMICAL MERCURY:
- This hollow crystal ball is filled
with the essence of quicksilver. It quickens and
facilitates its owner's manipulation of arcane power.
Theophrastus may always choose to take the first action
of the magic phase, just as if it were his own side's
turn.
Theophrastus only.
- DAGGER OF RADICAL SILVER:
- This double-edged blade severs the
threads which sustain and bind enchantments. Against
Undead and Daemons, unsaved wounds are doubled.
Additionally, hostile "remains in play" spells
cast on Theophrastus or the unit he is with are
automatically dispelled at the beginning of the magic
phase.
Theophrastus only.
- SWORD OF RADICAL IRON:
- Baser metals are unable to withstand
blows struck by a blade forged from this essential
substance. Normal armour is therefore useless; only magic
armour may save.
Theophrastus' bodyguards only.
