THE ANCESTORS OF
KATHERINE DEMUTH
OF WALDOBORO, LINCOLN CO., ME.
Research presented in the 1998 book, "Broad Bay Pioneers" starts the Demuth line with Christian Demuth who:
"was a dragoon in Kettler's Regiment and Captain Lieutenant Hohndorff's Company. Klaus Petry of Duisburg, Germany, researched this family and learned that the Kettler Regiment of Dragoons was later called the Tettau Regiment of Dragoons and that a dragoon named Christian Demuth was listed as serving in the bodyguard of Regiment Commander Colonel Albrecht von Tettau at the end of 1695 and in 1696. Christian was not noted as a member of Major von Tettau's company in 1689." "Broad Bay Pioneers"
Christian Demuth and Elgen Schmidt of Birkenbeul had a son out of wedlock. Elgen was the daughter of Georg Schmidt of Birkenbeul. The Demuths were not French Heguenots. The surname Demuth is common throughout Germany, particularly in Schlesien.

1. Johann Henrich Demuth
Demuth, Johann Henrich, the natural son of Christian Demuth and Elgen Schmidt, was b. in Birkenbeul, Rheinland, Prussia, and baptised on 28 Feb 1693 in Hamm Parish nearby. His sponsors at his baptism were Johan Henrich Schmidt (what relation?), Johannes Birckenbeul and Anna Lisa, wife of Diederich of Birkenbeul. Johann emigrated to New England, arriving first in Boston 9 Nov 1751 on the Priscilla . His name is found on a petition signed by those who came to Boston in 1751. Johann and his family subsequently removed to the German settlement of Broad Bay in Maine, later known as Waldoboro. He was killed about 1757 on Storer's Point during the French and Indian Wars.
Johann m. Sybilla Maria Becker on 22 Oct 1716 in Hamm Parish. She was baptized 14 Jul 1697 in Etzbach, Rheinland, Prussia, the daughter of Henrich Becker and Margret Wilhelm of Etzbach.
Johan and Sybilla Maria lived in Birkenbeul and belonged to the Lutheran Parish in Hamm. In addition Hamm also contained a Reformed parish to which a number of residents from Birkenbeul belonged. Sybilla Maria was the namesake and a sponsor at the baptism of a child of Johannes Henrich and Anna Christina Potchen of Birkenbeul in the Reformed parish of Hamm in 1741. Johann and Sybilla's daughter, Maria Christina, also sponsored at a baptism in the Potchen family in 1746.

1. Maria Margretha Demuth, b. Birkenbeul, bapt. 8 Dec 1717 Hamm. She m. Johan Dietrich Birckenbeul on 21 Oct 1746 in Hamm, Reformed Parish. Johan was the son of Christian Birckenbeul.
2. Johann Wilhelm Demuth, b Birkenbeul, bapt. 21 Jan 1720 Hamm, bur. 23 Sept 1724 Hamm.
3. Anna Timothea Demuth, b. Birkenbeul, bapt. 28 Feb 1723 Hamm. She had an illegitimate daughter whose father was listed as Johannes Roder son of Johann Peter Roder in Irser.
1. Maria Catharina Roder/Demuth, b. Birkebeul, bapt. 14 Jan 1750 in Hamm.
4. Anna Catharina Francisca Demuth, b. Birkenbeul, bapt.14 Apr 1726 in Hamm.
5. Maria Christina Demuth, b. Birkebeul, bapt. 13 Feb 1729 in Hamm, d. 11 Oct 1808 Waldoboro, Lincoln Co., ME.. She m. George Schmaus in 1757.
6. Anna Maria Demuth, b. Birkenbeul, bapt. 20 April 1732 in Hamm, she was bur 23 April 1734 in Hamm.

8. Johannes Henrich Demuth, b. Birkenbeul, bapt. 17 Aug 1738 in Hamm, buried 7 June 1740 in Hamm.
Demuth, Johann Georg, b. prob. in Feb 1734/35 in Birkenbeul, Rheinland, Prussia and bapt. 20 Feb 1734/35 in Hamm, Rheinland, Prussia. He d. 10 Sep 1810 in Waldoboro, Lincoln Co., ME. He married Maria Catharina Weller abt 1762 in Hamm, Rheinland, Prussia She was bapt. 9 Mar 1749, and d. 18 aug 1820, prob. in Waldoboro. The information I have so far doesn't state where she was born but it was probably in Hamm, Birkenbeul or one of the surrounding towns. She was the dau. of Anreas Weller and Anna Maria Froelich. Children:
1. Henry Demuth, b. abt 1763 (Broad Bay) Waldoboro, ME., d. aft. 1818 Waldoboro; m. abt 1791 Ruth.
2. Katherine Demuth*, b. abt. 1765 in (Broad Bay) Waldoboro, Lincoln Co., ME. and d. Apr. 1831 Waldoboro. She m. John Seidensberger 10 Sept 1784 in Waldoboro.
3. George Demuth. b. abt .1767 (Broad Bay) Waldoboro, ME., d. aft .1811. Probably the 1st Lieut. in Andrew Schenk's Co, Col. Mason Wheaton's Reg't. during the Revolutionary War whose service was limited to local expeditions. His wife's hname is unknown, they had one child:
1. George Demuth Jr., b. 1797 in Cushing; m. Mary Higman on 15 April 1820 in Waldoboro. They had at least three children.
4. Elizabeth Demuth, b. 1769 (Broad Bay) Waldoboro, ME., d. 14 April 1860 Rockland, Knox, ME., She is buried in the Ulmer Cemetery. Elizabeth m. Mathias Ulmer abt 1792, he was the son of Johannes Ulmer & Mary Catharina Remilly.
5. Margaret Demuth , b. abt 1775 Waldoboro; m. a Mr. Wilson abt. 1795 .
6. John Demuth, b. 1777 Waldoboro, d. 1871 Waldoboro. Buried at Goshen Cemetery. He m. Jane McClintock on 20 Dec 1817 in Waldoboro. He was a veteran of the War of 1812.
7. Jacob Demuth, b. 1780 Waldoboro, d .26 Dec 1863 in Thomaston, Knox, ME. He m. Mehitable Dodge on 14 Sept 1805 in Thomaston. Mehitable was the daughter of Ezekiel Goddard Dodge & Katharin Gregg.. Jacob was a veteran of the War of 1812.
8. Martin Demuth, b.1784 in Waldoboro, d. 1853 in Waldoboro, buried in the Goshen Cemetery. He m. Jane Labe on 22 Oct 1811 in Waldoboro. She was the daughter of John Labe and Margaret Jung.
9. Jenny Demuth, b. abt .1785 in Waldoboro.
10. Charles Demuth, b 1787 in Waldoboro, d 1842 Waldoboro, bur Goshen Cem. He m. Margaret Labe in Waldoboro 16 Oct 1814. She was the daughter of John Labe and Margaret Jung]. Charles was a veteran of the War of 1812.
11. Philip Demuth. b. 20 Dec 1791 in Waldoboro, d. 18 Jan 1853 in Waldoboro. He m. Sally Castner 8 Jan 1822 in Waldoboro. She was the daughter of Ludwig Castner and Anna Sarah Schwartz. Philip was a veteran of the War of 1812.

An example of this from 1293: "Heinrich dictus Diemuot, zu Oberried" (i.e. Heinrich the modest of Oberried). Demut is still listed in German dictionaries with the meaning meekness or humility."
