The term Mitzvot (divine precept)signifies specific commands contained in the Torah, used generally in Talmudic literature for the divine commandments totalling 613.
611 mitzvot were given by G-d through Moshe, while the first 2 were given directly by G-d at Sinai. We can divide the commandments into those being relative to the land, Eretz Yisrael. We can further divide the commandments into those dealing with the relationship between man and G-d, and those between man and fellow man. It is important to note to that a mitzva cannot be fulfilled if in the process, another mitzva is transgressed. Mitzva can also mean charity. In that sense, it refers to any opportunity to fulfill the comprehensive duty of men toward fellow men. The reward of doing mitzvot is more mitzvot. This is to say, with each mitzva fulfilled, the opportunity to fulfill another one is the product, thus another opportunity to do good towards G-d, and towards man. |
