One of my favorite groups from the heavy metal era was Deep Purple. They were formed in 1968. Probably one of the most famous guitar licks in rock and roll belonged to them. It was in the song "Smoke on the Water".

The band had some popularity in 1968 with the song called "Hush", but it wasn't until they released the album entitled Machine Head in 1972 that they became a household name. They became famous for their lightning-fast duels between keyboardist Jon Lord and lead guitarist Ritchie Blackmore. In 1975 the band earned their title in the Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest band in the world.

The band went through a lot of changes in personnel through the years. It is well known that Ritchie Blackmore and singer Ian Gillan didn't quite see eye to eye, which made for a lot of tension within the group. But when they were together, they made some great music!

There were several different line ups within the group. On two of there albums intitled Burn and Stormbringer, the lead singer was David Coverdale. Later he went on to front the band Whitesnake.

Ritchie Blackmore went on to form the band Rainbow. They produced several albums with different line ups each time.

Today the lineup is pretty much original except Steve Morse has replaced Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar.
