The Golden Triangle

I don't have the foggiest idea how this portion of South East Asia became known as the Golden Triangle, but that hasn't caused me any sleepless nights. Having been a child in the late sixties and early seventies, I had vague impressions of Vietnam taken from the nightly news and a clear image of the evacuation of Saigon. Cambodia I knew from the movie the Killing Field's and a few first hand stories told by an acquaintance who had escaped with his father through Thailand in the late 70's. I had a vague idea that Angkor Wat was there and knew just a little about its history. Laos, I knew almost nothing of. So, I decided to go there for a vacation. I was already interested in S.E. Asia, but I probably wouldn't have gone for a couple more years if it hadn't been for the fact that Bill Wu was leading arranging a tour. Bill had led the tour I took through China, and become a friend, so I decided to move up the timetable for Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
