In Angel Island Zone, grab one of the swinging vinces and press Left, Left, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Up, and Up. When you hear the familiar chime sound, pause the game and press Button A to return to the title screen. At the title screen, scroll down past the Competition Option to find the 'Sount Test' Option. Choose it to enter the Stage Select Menu.

In the Launch Base Zone, and perform a Spin Dash (without moving) on one of those alarms that attract the flying robots. The robots will keep flying into you and dying, thus racking up points, and will lead to 1-Ups. If you are patient, your lives will build up to 99.
