Tweezle's Living Room

I remember sitting in my living room with my best friend from high school. I hadn't seen her in years, and I was so happy to see her and hear about her life. She surveyed our home and looked at me and said, "So what do you do for a living?" Proudly I looked her straight in the eye and said, "I'm a housewife and mother!" She looked around again at our living room and said "Oh, so when are you going to get a job so you guys can buy nice furniture and fix this place up?" This was supposed to be my best friend. The friend I told all my secrets all through school. She knew my loves and my passions. She knew all the intimate details of my life (except for the last few years we were out of touch), and now, when I was going to tell her how happy I was, she should have just slapped me in the face and got it over with. She didn't stay long and hasn't been back, even though she drives by to visit her parents. Sigh.

After our meeting, I became critical of my life. We weren't doing very well in the finance department, but we were paying all the bills. Just not lots left over for the frilly things. I was home where I knew that God wanted me to be, taking care of my children and home. My friend from school had no children, nor does she to this day. She has a career, and she is divorced. I, on the other hand, have become satisfied with my life, and my used furniture. I know that I am the one who got to see my child's first steps, and we are the ones who makes sure they are getting a good education. Money is not important in our home. It pays the bills and feeds and clothes everyone, but it doesn't make us happy. So, if you decide to stay for a visit, please sit on the right hand side of the sofa, because there is a spring on the left side that loves to get you in the middle of the back...
