Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., founded January 15, 1908, was the first black Greek sorority. The pupose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. is to cultivate and encourage academic excellence, community service, sisterhood, high ethical standards, as well as unity and friendship among college women.

Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. are very dedicated to the community. This is shown by our participation in the Martin Luther King Jr. birthday celebration, mentoring for sixth grade girls at N.P Moss Elementary School, as well as participating in Black Santa Activities. Additional activities include playing bingo with the elderly at Amelia Manor Nursing Home, the adoption of the Telementry Unit at University Medical Center (where we have donated over $1,000 for equipment and given gift baskets the the patients),and donating numerous canned goods to the food net.

Along with the honor of being woman of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority comes a very busy schedule. We are involved in such programs as the Student Government Association, Union Program Council, Southwestern Association of Student Nurses, Pre-Med Society, Residence Hall Staff, Accounting Society, Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity, the Food Services Committtee, the USL gospel Choir, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Acadiana, and the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society. The 1998 recipient of the Greek Woman of the Year Award was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. We have also received the Dean's Choice Award this year. Women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. also maintain very high grade point averages and always find time to spend with each other. We are intelligent, involved, spirited, and friendly young ladies who are making our founders' dreams come true.
