S_BLADE PROFILES

A fully reversible pump-turbine is a device, which works both as a pump and as a turbine for both directions of flow. Such devices find applications in tidal power plants and to some extent in textile industries. Conventional single cambered aerofoils are found to be unsuitable for the above devices . Double cambered S-Blade profiles were shown to give better performance under varying operating conditions. Unlike the conventional single cambered aerofoils, an S-Blade profile has convex and concave curvatures on both upper and lower surfaces making the flow very complicated even at small angles of attack.

For the sake of convenience the S-Blade profile is designated by an alphabet followed by a four-digit number such as S3525 in which the letter S represents the S- camber. The first and second digits represent the maximum camber and the maximum thickness respectively as a percentage of chord and the last two digits taken together represent the location of the maximum camber as a percentage of chord from either end of the profile (Fig.1)
