Summer, 1935 - Summer, 1998

This man, this father/teacher/artist, was the main impetus in my creative life. His hard work, discipline, dedication and knowledge gave me the desire to find my way. His humor, love of life, love of challenge, and creativity gave me inspiration.

The picture you see of him, I have to confess, I scanned from the Orange County Register's Friday, June 26th edition. Yes, I changed it atleast 15%. Some of the change was removing a wrinkle or two, which he would have never requested, but I was reciprocating the favor....Once he had the print shop at the Fullerton Tribune carve a good percentage off of my duff from a photo taken of me from behind, in too-tight jeans. My friend and I were painting a 30-foot by 40-foot sign he had been asked to do for a fundraiser at the Angel Stadium for St. Jude's hospital in Fullerton. We were up on ladders and the view was not very complimentary. One slice of the exacto blade and I was 20 pounds smaller. I won't tell you which year that was. It was in this century, though.

When my father died, I promised myself I would never let someone else die that I cared about so much, without letting them know how special they were to me. I talked to Graham a while ago and thanked him for his hard work and inspiration. Unfortunately, I failed to tell him just how special he really was to me. I don't think it would have made a big difference in his life, but know it would have in mine. When I found out yesterday that he passed away, I thought: How could this be? I am not finished!!

It just goes to show we are not in control.

I certainly hope he will be in heaven.................
Because after milenniums of sitting on Jesus' lap, spending time with my dad and grandpa,
I will give Graham a hug.
