Refers to nuisance calls, obscene calls and threatening calls of various types. These annoying telephone calls range from relatively harmless pranks initiated by children, through offensive and potentially harmful acts, to clearly dangerous threats that must be countered.
Nuisance calls are commonly made by children are are probably harmless. You may want to report it to the police. THE BEST ADVICE IS TO SIMPLY HANG UP.
Do not encourage a return call. If the calls persist to the point that they become harassment, report it to the police. Call Display, Last Call Return and Call Block are services available on your phone that you may find helpful.
Obscene calls represent abnormal behaviour that could be potentially dangerous. People who make obscene calls find gratification from the response to the recipient (you). The best initial reaction is to just hang up immediately. Telephone companies have recommended that women list their names in the telephone directory without the prefix “Miss” or “Mrs” and to use initials only of first names. Another possibility for a woman who has been bothered by obscene calls is to obtain an unlisted telephone number.
If obscene calls persist, the police will investigate. An important preliminary step in the investigation is to establish a time pattern for the calls. This will assist the police in apprehending the caller. Please keep a detailed list of times when the calls come.

- Keep bank books, cheques and cancelled cheques in a safe place. Where no one else knows where they are. An old cheque with your signature on it retrieved by anyone can mean a lot of trouble for you.
- Check with local business bureau’s before signing contracts or making down payments. ALWAYS read details of a contract before signing. If you are unsure about some of the details, consult a lawyer before signing. Be sure to see if there is a cancellation policy on any contracts within a certain period of time. If not, be sure it is what you want, be absolutely sure. Once that contract is signed by you, you are responsible for the payment or instalments and can be sued if you don’t hold up your end of the deal.
- Destroy all old credit cards (cut them up in many, many small pieces), old Identification (such as driver’s licenses, outdated or reissued Health Cards should also be cut up into many small pieces), and unused cheques on closed accounts. It is a good idea when cutting up any papers with personal information on them, to once cut up in small pieces to throw them in your garbage where your food scraps go also. This will help destroy any remaining tell tale signs of information.
- Never sign a blank cheque or endorse your pay cheque before you are in the bank! If by chance you lose this cheque or it is stolen, it is already signed and anyone can cash it.
- Never carry signed blank cheques along with your identification. A signed blank cheque is money in the bank for someone else if found or stolen from you.
- Never have your address on your key ring. Neither key ring, not your apartment keys or your vehicle if you have one. This is a dangerous pattern, it can lead anyone right to your home and open the door for them.
- Never accept “3rd” party cheques from unknown persons. Only banking institutions can confirm authenticity. The cheque may be worthless and you will be out your money.
