Vertical Watch Community Crime Prevention Program:

“IS THAT A DRUG HOUSE?”

Do you have a drug house near you?

Drug houses don’t just happen in other neighbourhoods. There are drug houses in all types of neighbourhoods. There are four things that make a drug house:

Product
Buyer
Seller
Location

Most neighbourhoods have very little control over Product, Buyer or Seller. Drug dealers look for locations where neighbours do not communicate and isolate themselves. This makes it easy to intimidate those neighbours that do notice drug activity. Drug dealers like neighbourhoods that say, “It can’t happen here” or “It doesn’t effect me personally”. Money is the key element for the drug dealer. If they establish a drug house where kids and adults have money to buy drugs, business will thrive.

What are the warning signs of drug activity in the neighbourhood?

Do any of these sound familiar?

- Excessive foot traffic to and from an apartment.
- Loitering in a building lobby or stairwells, etc.
- Frequent and unusual traffic patterns – Stop, Enter, and Leave.
- Cars stop and a particular resident comes out and talks briefly with occupants in it.
- Threats of intimidation connected to a residence.
- Open exchange of drugs and money.
- Gang activity in area.
- Graffiti on structure or in area.
- Sudden increase in criminal activities.

Prevention is the best way to stop drug houses.

You can reduce the chance that a drug house moves into your neighbourhood. Start a Vertical Watch Program in your building (we are here for advice and will answer all your questions), and get to know your neighbours. As problems develop, work with your neighbours, property management, security (if any) and police to resolve them quickly.

What should you do if there is a drug house in your building or the neighbourhood?

One of the tools of the drug dealer is intimidation. There is safety in numbers. Start a Vertical Watch Program in your building. Speak with your property manager about problems that the tenants are causing for neighbours. If you are having problems the property owner is having problems. Point this out to them. Report all problems to the appropriate agencies. Police, security or property management or all of them if needed.

If we are going to stop crime (or a substantial portion of it), and drugs from taking over this neighbourhood we must all work together as a team. Without your help and assistance the Police Department face many restrictions. Your involvement is the key to stopping crime. And please never think someone else has reported something. Pick up the phone and do it yourself!
