“INSURANCE”
- Check your policy, and make sure that you are adequately covered. Apartment insurance is very important. Always be sure you have it, even if you must choose minimum coverage.
- Photograph and compile a list of the contents of your home, room by room, and your valuable items, such as jewellery, any silverware, figurines, paintings, etc. that are of value. Keep these photos and the list in a safe, fireproof place. It is preferable that you rent a small safety deposit box at your bank to store these papers and any other valuable papers you have in your home. Get them out of there and in a safe place like the safety deposit bank at the bank. If you have a camcorder, film your apartment room by room and store the tape with your list of valuables. A Polaroid camera or regular camera work just as well though.
- Some insurance companies offer a discount if additional security measures are taken. Inquire about this with your insurance agency or broker.
- Renew your policy when the bill comes in. Never delay this. Something may happen in the meantime between the time your policy has lapsed and the time you renew it. You will not be covered then. Always pay your instalments on time and renew when requested.

"Can you spare a quarter?" Familiar words to anyone who shops or walks around any shopping area, or public place. How should you react t someone who poses this question to you? Is it best to ignore a panhandler or to give them money?
Here are some suggestions. You may wish to consider the following in an encounter with a panhandler.
- Any stranger who approaches you on the street should be viewed with caution, regardless of their appearance.
- NEVER display money or reveal where you keep it to anyone. Someone asking for change or another observer may be tempted to forcibly demand that you give up all of your cash.
- ALWAYS report any confrontation that you have with someone who physically or verbally forces you to give them money. Go to the nearest phone and report the incident to the police.
