This step-by-step manual is simple to follow. It is written in layman's terms and easy to understand.
One thing about this manual though, since this program was started in the City of Toronto, this city and it's police dept. are mentioned throughout it. As well as some items that apply only to the City of Toronto. Please do not let this hamper your efforts to take this program under your wing and to try it wherever you live. The only thing that cannot be adapted to suit your own community's needs are the "3 Basic Rules". These are implemented and designed for your own safety and must be adhered to. If you do not wish to implement these 3 basic rules, then it is not a Vertical Watch Program. Other than that, this program is adjustable to meet your own needs. Simply replace Toronto with your city. You may have to look into a few things such as where your crime prevention officer can be located or the fact that your city does not have our "Vertical Watch Signs" but these are simple things that can be remedied. Your police dept. can point you in the right direction for the crime prevention officer (he may have a different title in your city or community) and as for signs, many city's have the "Neighbourhood Watch Signs" available. Although these are different programs, if it is all that is available go with them. You can always talk to city officials where you live and request they make these "Vertical Watch Signs". You could have your city officials contact the City of Toronto and make a request for the blueprints for the plates. I do not know if they are available for distribution but it is worth the call.
Although this manual is copyrighted I do give anyone that accesses this site permission to print off a copy.
My only request... Please, if you do print this manual I would greatly appreciate it if you could email me at the below address and let me know. It would also be appreciated if you could leave me your name, the city you live in, and your email address and if you have the time, sign our guestbook!
The Vertical Watch is only as strong as its member's participation. When members call either security or police, action is taken faster and problems are solved before they get out of hand. This is an information sharing program. Police and security cannot be everywhere and any and all information they receive helps. This program is not a cure-all program but it does help lessen problems to a great degree. Remember, nothing is 100% and we must work together for a safer and cleaner place to live.
The Vertical Watch involves everyone from children to seniors, able-bodied and disabled people and even shut-ins. All can participate and contribute in some way to this program.
This program works with the co-operation of Police, security, property management and residents as a team working together to improve your building and to help keep it safer for you and your families.
The rest is up to you... Simply start clicking on the pages and read and print. I wish you well in your endevours and a happy and safe community!
Sincerely,
Vickie Rennie
