What is a Vertical Watch© Program?

Vertical Watch is a community crime prevention program, organized and operated by concerned residents in an apartment building. The program's objectives are to create an awareness of criminal activities in the area, and to encourage all residents to become more responsible for the overall safety of their neighbourhood, their building, and their neighbours.

Your home starts at the lobby door to your building, not on the inside of your apartment door. The grounds of your apartment building are also part of your home. So are the laundry room, storage units, halls, stairwells, recreation facilities, etc. Anything connected with yur building should be considered part of your home.

Vertical Watch is similar to the successful Neighbourhood Watch Program, with four exceptions. These exceptions are:

1.   We bring together and use all the resources and people available in the community.

2.   We include anti-drug literature and drug education in our program. Drug education is not normally part of a Neighbourhood Watch but is instead dealt with as a separate issue. With Vertical Watch we incorporate it into the program.

3.   We have general meetings, open to all members, where safety and security questions can be asked and will be answered. These concerns are addressed by qualified personnel, i.e. police, security personnel, building management, etc., so only correct information is supplied.

4.   We have regular floor captain meetings where community resource people, including the police and security personnel, take part.

The Three Basic Rules of Vertical Watch

1.   NO PATROLLING:
It is dangerous to be seen as looking for drug trafficking activities.

2.   NO CONFRONTATIONS:
It is dangerous to confront drug traffickers or users directly.

3.   INFORMATION DISCUSSED AT FLOOR CAPTAIN MEETINGS IS STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL.
