Vertical Watch ProgramĀ©: Floor Captain Meetings

Who Attends?   Floor captain meetings are very important. Present at these meetings should be the crime prevention officer, members of the area foot patrol, building security personnel, the chairperson(s), representatives from property management and the volunteer floor captains. This meeting should not be open to the entire membership. Only those individual who work closest with the police should be in attendance.

What Happens?   Floor captains report on their floors. Any suspicious activities? Apartments that have constant traffic? Apartments where it seems everyone has a key? And so on. This is why the meeting is not open to everyone. After all the floors are reviewed, the discussion moves on to security-related matters of general interest. For example, the police will provide a description of someone they are looking for, or security may ask if an individual has been seen in or near the building. It is important to include property management in these discussions, so that they are aware of what happens in the building when they are not present.

Floor captain meetings are also when other important matters are discussed. Plans for an open house, a special event or meeting, for example. Having all the floor captains together is an opportunity to ask for volunteers to help run such activities. It is also a good time to hold votes on important issues. Stress to floor captains how important these meetings are, and that they are expected to attend as many such meetings as possible.

INFORMATION SHARED AT FLOOR CAPTAIN MEETINGS IS STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL AND MUST NEVER BE REPEATED OUTSIDE OF THE MEETINGS.

Meeting Times?   Floor captain meetings should be held at least once a month, in the evenings. They do not have to last any more than an hour. A small amount of time is all that is necessary.
