Linton Lake Summary

See Pictures of this Hike. Read the Journal for this Hike.
Mileage: 3.8 miles round trip, plus side trails Elevation gain: 300 ft Directions: From Eugene, take I-105/Hwy 126 (McKenzie Highway) East out of town for over 40 miles. Pass through the town of McKenzie Bridge. Five miles later, turn Right on Hwy 242 (Old McKenzie Highway). Follow it 11 miles to Alder Springs Campground on the Left, and Linton Lake Trailhead on the Right.
Linton Lake Trail goes up and down a bit as it meanders through forest and old lava beds, but only gains a total of 300 ft. Upon reaching Linton Lake, it stays high above the water for a while before ending at a few campsites and a creek along the shore. A side trail continues around the lake, though it is not maintained. In May 2006 we continued along this side trail over a lot of fallout and some overgrown brush, but we could not cross the main inlet stream at the far corner of the lake. The water was too high to ford and the dog couldn't have safely crossed the logs. This crossing may or may not be possible later in the year.
Several islands dot the lake on the western shore, and it might be fun to follow the shoreline on that side to view them. One looks like it is an island made completely of lava rock, although we didn't get close enough to be sure. While we were there we saw several people fishing from the shore, and a few even brought an inflatable boat up there so they could go out on the water.
