Some Magickal Laws

The Laws of Magick, similar to the Laws of Physics, are ways that we can look at the magickal universe around us. We can use them to better understand how our magick works, and what the limitations to magick really are.

The Law Of World View

The Law of World View states that the world we perceive is the mixture of true reality and our perception. Or, the way we view things shape the world around us. Changing the way we view the world does not change the world itself, but rather our perception of it.

For example, if three people witness an car accident, each of the three people probably noticed different things, and perceived the events in different ways. The three stories are not exactly the same. So, which story would be true? They would all be.

What is true for one person may not be true for someone else. It all depends on the perceptions of the persons involved.

The Law of Reflection

The Law of Reflection states that the Microcosm is the Macrocosm. Or, as the old phrase states, "As above, so below."

Similar to the way that a fragment of a laser holograph contains the entire original image, each thing contains the image of the entire universe. When one image is tuned, it causes changes in the other image. To perceive one is to perceive the other.

The Law of Attention

This law states that the more that someone looks for evidence that something is true, the more one will find. Since we create our worlds by our perceptions, if we rearrange our attention, we rearrange our world view.

The Law of Relative Truth

Every statement is true in one sense, and false in any other, and meaningless in a third. Once again, it all depends on how we perceive the world (the World View) and what our vantage points are.

The Law of Pragmatism

If it works, it is true. A world view is only valid if it enables one to accomplish their goals. The more successful a world view is in fulfilling the perceivers goals, the more valid it is said to be.

The Law of Unity

Everything through time and space is linked, either directly or indirectly to everything else.

The Law of Association

If two things have something in common, that thing can be used to influence both things. They also have a mutual influence on each other. The more they have in common, the greater the influence.

The Law of Similarity

The cause and the effect of something resemble each other. A ritual to cause a rainstorm might involve dripping water on the ground. A ritual to fly might include wearing feathers or wings. This is what is known as Sympathetic Magick.

The Law of Contagion

Things once in contact continue to interact after separation. Anything once in contact with anything, may be used as a witness for that thing. A good example might be the to use someone's hair or nail clippings to charge a voodoo doll.

This is what is known as Homeopathic Magick.

The Law of Paradox

No World View may encompass the whole world. Two laws or world views may contradict each other and still be true in their proper context. Two people can perceive the same thing in different ways.

The Law of Connection

Every action is an energy exchange. To have power over something is for it to have power over you. Two opposites each contain the essence of the other. For example, at the north pole, ten degrees is a really warm temperature, while on the equator, the same temperature is cold.

The Law of Synthesis

Any two opposing forces or concepts may be unified in a force or concept which contain both original opposites.

The Law of Duality

Any concept or force may be divided into two totally opposite concepts or forces, each of which contains the essence of the other. Opposites can only be defined by what they have in common.

Law of Personification

Any concept, force, or object may be considered to be alive, to have a personality, and to be an entity.

Corollary to the Law of personification

The Law of Invocation and Evocation

Any concepts, forces, or objects which manifest as entities can and should be treated as real beings. These beings can also be viewed as objectified aspects of ourselves, but it is useless to take this attitude while dealing with them. Do not be fooled because something is only a personification of a pattern of energies.
