Magick vs. Thought

By Steven Clements

What is magick?  Magick is usually defined as the use of a person or groups’ will to effect a needed change.  Though specific definitions and wording vary from person-to- person and group-to-group this is the common thread or theme that I have found through several magickal systems.  In order for magick to be effective, there must be the desire or will present to help acquire the necessary energy to make it happen.

Therefore since magick uses will and/or desire, then what constitutes “will” and “desire”.  Many would say a feeling or emotion and I would agree to a point.  How does one express an emotion or a feeling or even to recognize it?  This is accomplished through thought.  Thought is a conscientious effort to analyze and identify the emotion, feeling, or to express a viewpoint.  Think about the difference between love and anger.  With love, your heart races, your breath quickens, and you feel warm, and good.  With anger, your heart races, your breath quickens, you may feel warm or cold, and generally most people feel the urge to destroy.  Most feelings come with our basic instincts others are learned.  For example, you despise your boss and want to toss them out window of your three-story building, but your learned behavior (morals) tells you that it is not appropriate for you to do that.  You are using your thoughts (intellectual will) to counter act your natural instinct (natural will).

Since your will can be instinctual or intellectual, then your feelings or thoughts alone can create magick.  I would say that feelings are stronger in magickal workings then pure intellectual thought but either one can accomplish a needed result.  When the two are combined then and focused together then your magickal workings become stronger.  Important note to remember is that since a single thought or feeling can set about the beginnings for needed change in your life, be careful what you think (wish for) especially when working around items that are generally considered magickal in nature.  If you are working on an item such as a Talisman be sure to focus on your needed goal, don’t allow your mind to wander, as you will empower that thought as well.  If you begin to lose focus then stop, ground, and refocus.  In summary, thoughts are magickal in nature.

Here is a quick word about the use of the word control in magickal workings.  I tend to frown on the use of the word control.  Control implies that you have complete authority over a given subject or matter.  This is simply not true.  You never have control over wind, rain, fire, etc.  You might have considerable influence with something but you never actually control it.  A belief in that you have control is a dangerous thing because the spirits, Gods, and Goddesses tend to frown upon too much arrogance.  For example, I was camping with some friends near the ocean one weekend.  It had been cloudy most of the day with a minor chance for rain.  As the day turned into night, it began to sprinkle a little as we all sat around the bonfire and settled in to have a really grand evening.  After about an hour or so, I looked up to the sky and stated, “Is that the best you can do?”  Well, it was not the best and we were quickly punished for my arrogance.  Within two minutes the skies opened up and the winds began to howl.  We were all soaked to the bone.  The winds howled all night and kept us awake until about 0430 or 0500.  When the spirits had vented their rage, they gave us a break.  I apologized many times that night and the next morning.  About 0800, we were packing up the remains of our camp and planning to get out of there.  We could see that out on the ocean about thirty minutes out was a storm coming in.  It was just enough time or so we thought.  One of the people that we were camping with stood up and shouted, “You just keep on coming because by the time you get here, and we’ll be gone.”  I shouted “No.”, but it was too late.  The rain began to pour again.  The moral is that though we are magickal we don’t control anything and the influence we have can be over ridden.

The only control that you have is when you are gathering the energy, focusing it, and preparing to release it.  Once the magickal energy is released, you no longer have control over the original energy.  You can have an influence on your original energy through the use of other magickal energy or workings.  It is for this reason that it is important to maintain focus.

Many spells that I have worked on are cast in stages over several nights, with the final stage occurring on the most appropriate night, day of the week, phase of the moon, and astrological correspondences.  If this sounds like a lot of work, then remember that you get what you put in to it.  My Spirituality is worth the extra effort and so is the person(s) I am helping.  I build my will, both natural and intellectual, and store it until the final night and I then release it all towards its’ destination.  Can you see why it is important to maintain focus on your goal?
