Monthly Feature October 2002
SUPERTEST WONDERHOCKEY GAME
This month , I have chosen to feature the Supertest game board I recently acquired.
Supertest,
with Head Office located in London, Ontario was heavily involved with
broadcasting the games of the London Tecumseh Hockey
Team (IHL league) throughout
the 1920's and 30's . Herb Rutherford broadcast
home games directly from the London
Arena on
CJGC radio (now
CFPL). When the games were played out of town he was sent
a series of telegrams of the major action and made
up the entire broadcast in the studio in London. He was so well skilled
in doing this, the listeners thought he was actually at the
game.
This is the only board game I can think of that
didn't have a separate game piece
for each player . The game came with one cardboard
punch-out puck in the lower
right corner. The first player would twirl the
metal spinner and after comparing the
resulting number with the corresponding chart of
32 game plays , move the puck
according to that play . The same player would continue
spinning until his game play
came up "lose the puck" or a goal was scored. The
next player would move the puck
in the other direction . It seems to have been a well
thought out and interesting game .
At least two versions of the game were
produced . The game above features a photo of
Mr. Rutherford speaking into a microphone, and the
seasons schedule, leaving room for
only the upper portion of the visible gas pump image.
There was no writing on the back side.
The version below utilized the reverse
side to promote Supertest 'winter' products and uses
a complete image of a Supertest visible gas pump ,
but not the schedule or Mr. Rutherfords
photo.
I can only speculate as to which game
board is the oldest , as mine is not dated , but does
include the month/day of Home and Abroad games . I
believe it would be after 1929 , when
Buffalo, Detroit and Cleveland teams joined the International
Hockey League (IHL).

Supertest Petroleum Corporation was a
active promoter of a wide range of sports
and I plan to describe these in future Monthly Features
.
