The new National Convention met on September 1792. The first thing on the agenda was to end the monarchy in France and declare France a republic. On the 17th of January , the National Convention voted King Louis XVI to die. His wife, Marie Antoinette, was also sent to the guillotine, except her execution was later in the year.
