Welcome to Bible Basics! A Bible study whose purpose is to introduce Jesus to the unsaved, the new believer and those seeking Jesus...to discover truths about our Lord and Savior. Throughout this study, terms will be explained, scripture cited as reference and as confirmation of other scripture. I pray that as you seek the Lord, He will reveal Himself to you in a new and fresh way. May He draw you closer, show you His incredible love for you, and bring you fresh insight into who He is and what his plans are for you. Be blessed in His love. Z We begin our study of Jesus in Matthew, following a conversation Jesus had with the Pharisees and Sadduces (teacher's of the law), concerning signs of the coming Messiah. Of course the Pharisees and Sadduces being blinded by their works and legalism, are unable to see that Jesus is the Christ...their Messiah. After leaving them, Jesus turns to His disciples, and asks... In Matthew 16:15-19 Jesus asks His disciples.... "But what about you?" he asked, "Who do you say that I am?" 16Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." First of all...What are disciples? More than learners, they are copies of their teacher, and their job when they are trained is to in turn train others. What sort of people were Jesus’ disciples? Not super saints, but everyday people like you and I. Fishermen, a tax collector, a rebel, etc. How did he teach them? By showing them the way, by explaining things in everyday language, by loving them and giving His life for them. What does it mean to be the Son of the living God? The Son is a copy of the Father and shows us the Father’s heart of love for us. He is the LIVING God, alive and active in our lives whether we know it or not, not some dumb idol carved out of wood, chiseled out of stone or cast into metal. He hears us when we talk to Him (pray) and cares about us. So...Why did God send His son? John 3:16 For so God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. What do you think "whosoever" means? Anyone...no matter what color, age, race, rich people, poor people...anyone who believes that Jesus is the Son of God and that He came to set us free from sin. What is everlasting life?? Does it mean that you will never die? We all will physically die one day, these bodies won’t last forever! They are vessels (containers, tents, houses) that hold our spirits in this earth. What do you think I mean when i say our spirit? There are several definitions of the word spirit... in this case we are talking about (Vine’s Exp. Dic.) ...the spirit represents the element of life in man, his natural “spirit”, but more than that ..his soul. So what do you think your soul is? Your soul is your mind (thoughts), your will and your emotions. So when John 3:16 says that we will have everlasting life ...it means that our souls..or what makes us who we are... will live forever. Ecclesiastes12:7 tells us...Then shall dust (out of which God made man’s body) return to the earth as it was, and the spirit shall return to God Who gave it. so the next question is...Return to God...where?? Heaven! Once again there are several meanings of the word heaven...when we talk about heaven here it means the dwelling place of God. ...the highest heaven (literally the heaven of heavens) “God’s abode is a unique realm not to be identified with the physical creation.(Vine’s)” Behold the heavens and the heaven of heavens is the Lord your God, the earth also, with all that is in it and on it. Deut.10:14 So, as John 3:16 promises us, if we believe in Jesus, that He is the Son of God, our spirits won’t die, but live forever with God! Alleluia!! Thank You Lord!! What a promise! To sum up toight's lesson... Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God!! That, as John 3:16 states;" For God so loved the world, that He sent His only begotton Son. That whosoever, believes in Him, shall not perish (die) but have eternal life." We saw that to be a follower of Jesus...a disciple...did not mean that they were rich or famous people..but "everyday" people like you and I. Jesus chose men from different walks of life...fisherman, a tax collector, and even a rebel! Jesus trained His disciples through example, He lived it...Love, peace, forgiveness, patience, humbleness... We saw through the Word, that although we will phsyically die someday, we can have eternal life, everlasting life, a life without end..just by simply believing in God's promise of John 3:16....that Jesus IS the Son of God.
