TIGER CAPTIVATES CANNES

CANNES -- The 53rd Cannes Film Festival suddenly has a masterpiece to celebrate, but it's not even in the official competition, which is a crying shame.
Taiwanese-American Ang Lee's gorgeous and thrilling romantic adventure movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon made its bow before the press yesterday -- to prolonged applause and a real buzz unique to mad Cannes.
The two-hour period epic makes its official world premiere tomorrow as a special presentation -- and instead should have been competing for prizes from Luc Besson's jury.
The only downside is that there is fear now that its male star, Chow Yun Fat, won't make it to the festival. Still coming are Lee and the two amazing female stars, martial arts master Michelle Yeoh (Pierce Brosnan's equal in the 007 flick Tomorrow Never Dies) and the breathtaking ingenue Zhang Ziyi, a former Beijing folk dancer.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, a martial arts love story set in a fantastical time in ancient China, is Lee's first Chinese-language movie since Eat Drink Man Woman in 1994. In the six years since, he has become one of the world's great directors with Sense And Sensibility, The Ice Storm and Ride With The Devil.
