Listed below are some of the young men from Baie Ste.-Marie who served during the First World War...many of which were with the Canadian Over-Seas Expeditionary Forces (C.E.F.).

As you look at the signatures of the young men listed below...look at their age...go back in time for a moment in remembrance of their courage. Remember...as they signed their name they understood that they may never see their homes again...their Baie Ste.-Marie...that they may never return to their loved ones. These are your fathers...grandfathers ...great uncles...or possibly that old man you remember sitting there staring at the "baie"...in his mind he may have been reliving a hell only those who experienced it could understand. Old and feeble now...but once he was a young man who was forced to do what no man should ever have to do...and then have to live with the memory...some ghosts never go away...

Go back with them in the trenches...the mustard gas...the mud...the deafening blast of the artillery...the screaming...the smell of blood...the stentch of burning flesh...the hunger...the cold....the fatique...not a very beautiful image is it...

Go back with these young men...and look through their eyes as they lifted their rifle at close range...bayonet fixed...the sights on his Lee-Enfield aligned on the enemy...another young man not older then they were. Look through their eyes as they could see that this young enemy was pleading with his own eyes for him not to shot...but our young soldier knew if he hesistated he would be killed...and as he pulled the trigger he could see the terror on the young enemy's face...because he didn't want to die either. Beleive me when I say...at times the memories that live within our hearts are much harder to bear then the incident was to experience...

Knell in a wet..muddy trench at Vimy Ridge with young Luke Comeau from Little Brook Station...of the 219th Battalion... Nova Scotia Highlanders...as he looks and sees a fog approching...a fog of death...this was the merciless mustard gas. Feel the fear he felt...listen to his heart pound against his chest...his mind racing... searching for his mask...because as he looks back at you he knows that these could be is last few minutes...his last few breaths...
