"Hunting is a Right...(yeah, sure it is)"

Some (not all) hunters believe that "Hunting is a Right". Whether this is a God given right or a Legislative right has yet to be proven to me:

I am aware of God giving "dominion" over the animals to mankind in Genesis, however I personally think that Christian beliefs and governmental laws should still to this day be kept separate. For if you wish to talk beliefs, and there are many, who is to determine which is correct and just what religion was that person anyway? Our nation was founded on this separation of Church and State,  yet our Pledge of Allegiance says "One Nation, under God". I don't have an answer really on that argument other than to tell you that if you break a law, your answer to the government will usually occur much quicker than your answer to the "Man Upstairs". I believe that when laws are made here on earth, they should be enforced here on earth.

This leaves us with Legislative action as the alternative, and it is usually an alternative that works.

A Privilege, Not a Right

As a shooting instructor, I have taught for years that shooting is a Privilege and not a Right. A Right can not be taken away from a person but a Privilege usually must be earned and most definitely can be taken from a person. Our government agrees with this, and has no proclivity to relinquish this belief, so live with it. One must prove ones ability to hunt.  It may be by simply purchasing a licensee, taking a hunters safety course, simply having permission to hunt the land or in some cases, proof that ownership of a firearm will not be a detriment to your society. However the proof is determined and to what depth it must go is not the issue here. The fact remains that you proved/met the state requirements to hunt.

Hunting is not a Right, but a Privilege that we as hunters must hold dear to our hearts. There are many ways that we can do ourselves and our hunting future harm. If we forget and do not manage these responsibilities, then there are those who appear to want to manage them for us. There are many Anti Hunters who feel that they know more about the White Tail than we do. They feel that they are in sole possession of the thought processes of what is best for that animal.

We on the other hand put countless hours and billions of dollars annually into the White Tail. We do this to assure that this animal will not only live, but THRIVE. THRIVE IN QUANTITY! Thrive in a quantity that will allow us to hunt, that will allow our sons and daughters to hunt, and to pass on these ethical and managemental beliefs to see that this chain never ends.
