On the Street

You're walking home from a long day of labs and classes. You're only about a block away from your apartment building when you notice that someone seems to be following you. You keep walking, but when you look back again you notice that he's gained on you. You're sure that if you run to your door, you can get inside before he can get there. What should you do?

1. Run into your building right away. You don't want to take any chances.

2. Turn around and look directly at him. If it still seems obvious that he is following you, then go to a public place or another house to get help.

3. Run directly at him, yelling, "I'm gonna get you!" That should scare him.

In the Car

You've just been changing tapes while waiting for a stoplight. When you look up, there's a man standing outside your car. He has his hand buried suspiciously in his coat pocket, and with his other fist he begins banging on your window, yelling for you to open your door. He says that if you let him in, he won't hurt you. He only wants the car, he insists. Should you let him in, counting on the fact that he only wants the car, or should you leave him outside and try to drive through the red light, which also runs the risk of angering him?

1. Let him get in the car, because you don't want to risk needless violence if he only wants your vehicle.

2. Drive through the red light and take off. You're not letting him get you or your vehicle.

3. Turn your music up louder and pretend like you don't hear him. If he really gets loud, roll down your window and ask him to be quiet.

In the Parking Lot

You've just gone on a shopping spree for your new apartment. You were practically the last one to leave the store, and now you stand outside in the parking lot trying to load up your car with the many boxes that surround it. The parking lot is almost empty, but you notice that a man in the distance is walking toward your vehicle. He did not come out of the store, and you don't know who he is. You still have a long way to go before your car is loaded. Should you continue loading the boxes, or should you get in the car, leaving vulnerable your valuable merchandise?

1. Start screaming and pulling your hair so he thinks you are crazy and will leave you alone.

2. Keep loading while watching him carefully. That way you reduce your possible losses.

3. Get in the car and lock the doors. It's better to leave the packages outside and risk losing your new purchases.

Public Transportation/Taxi

On the subway, you happen to bump into an old friend from college. you talk for awhile, and then as you approach his stop he gets up and heads for the door. Suddenly he turns around and calls back, "Hey what's your address? I probably don't live that far from you?" Should you tell him your address?

1. Tell him right away, because you might not see him again for a long time.

2. Tell him it's none of his business, and then give him an ugly face.

3. If you have time, write it down and hand it to him. If not, tell him to call you at work, and give him your number there.

At Home

The cable man was supposed to come to your place yesterday to install your television service, but he never showed up. Now, as you sit in your kitchen, your doorbell rings. You look out of the peephole and see a man with jeans and a t-shirt, carrying a toolbox. You ask who it is, and he replies, "Cable man." You are excited to get your TV service, but you weren't even told that he was coming. Should you let him in?

1. Say, "I don't accept anything less than punctual service!" Then tell him to go away.

2. You know that the cable man is always late, and you want your TV, so you should open up.

3. Ask him what his name is, then call the cable company to verify that he is an employee.

At Work

You are working late at the office on a big project. You finally decide to head home for the night, and walk out to the elevator area. When the elevator comes, there is a man in the elevator who you have never seen. You do not know everyone in the building, but it still makes you uncomfortable, especially after normal hours. If you don't get in, it could look very embarassing and awkward for the both of you. What should you do?

1. Pretend to forget something back in your office, and then in a few minutes get another elevator.

2. Just get in and stay cautious, because you know that your building has good security guards.

3. Lunge immediately for the alarm button, because that should really scare the man.

Bank/ATM

You're late meeting your friends at Cafe Brazil. You need to stop at an ATM to get cash before you get to the subway. On your way there is a machine that is open to the street. You know that by going a few blocks out of your way, you can use an ATM that is enclosed and requires a card to enter. Is it worth it to go to the enclosed machine even though it might cause you to miss the beginning of the show? What would you do?

1. Look up and down the block. If you don't see anyone, then start banking. Fast!

2. Wait for someone that looks trustworthy to come by and then ask them to stand guard while you take out some money.

3. Go the extra few blocks, get your money safely, and risk missing some of the show.
