A
GENEALOGY
OF
JOHANN HEINDRICH BEHL
(HENRY BALE)
OF
SUSSEX COUNTY, NEW JERSEY

I offer this genealogy to those people who are interested in the many descendants of Henry Bale of Sussex County, New Jersey. No genealogy can ever be complete - I’m sure that there were Bales being born even as this was being typed. All of this information came to me from cousins who were willing to share the material they had workied hard to collect. My job was merely to compile this material. Trips to New Jersey, Kentucky, Illinois and Kansas could have added more to this, and it is my hope that one of us can, some day, enjoy those trips and build upon this to produce a more comprehensive genealogy. As is noted in the text, there are over five hundred Bales buried in just one cemetery in Kentucky. So, we have our work cut out for us! I welcome all additions, corrections, and comments and hope that this brings enjoyment and edification to all those who read it.

The numbering system for this genealogy is designed so that future research can be easily inserted in its proper order. The six children of the Emmigrant, Henry Bale, are designated as 1 (Jacob), 2 (Peter), 3 (Henry), and so forth. The subsequent generations add their numeral to the number of their father. For example, 2-6 would be the sixth child of Peter, the second son of the emmigrant. Likewise, 1-6-2 would be the second child of the sixth child of Jacob, the first son of the emmigrant. In this way, any over-looked Bales can be added to the genealogy with an easily identified number.

Johann Heindrich Behl (Henry Bale) was born around 1730 in the Black Forest section of Germany. It is supposed that he came from Germany via Alsace-Lorraine through Brest, leaving Rotterdam on the ship Forest and landing in Philadelphia, PA on 11 October 1752. He was the first settler of the New Jersey village of Lafayette, building the first flouring mill and the first dam in the area, erecting his business on the Paulinskill Rive.

Henry and his wife, Elizabeth (Gunderman), raised seven children, three of whom, Jacob, Rhoda and Mary, moved to Kentucky with their families. Two of their sons, Peter and Henry, remained in the area, moving farther down the Paulinskill and building another mill and blacksmith shop in a settlement later to be known as Baleville.

Henry died in 1783 and is buried in a small cemetery in Ross’s Corner, Hampton Township, N.J. Henry Bale - b ca. 1730 in Germany; d 1783 Hampton Township, Sussex Co., N.J. ;md. to Elizabeth Gunderman, dau Conrad.

SECOND GENERATION

1

Jacob Bale, accompanied by his wife and several children, took the western route from new Jersey through Ohio and arrived in Kentucky in 1797. The family traveled in a covered wagon drawn by six horses and settled on the Big Brush Creek in Green Co., KY. Jacob built a dam and set up a primitive mill on the river. In 1837, three sons of jacob and Sapphia Bale, Jacob Jr., Abraham, and Solomon, moved to Illinois. Other family members remained in the Green Co., area and, in the old Bale graveyard on Big Brush Creek, are buried over 500 Bales.

From the book, Mentor Graham, The Man Who Taught Lincoln, comes this anecdote about Jacob Bale:

"This take you can hear today in the cabins on Brush Creek. Jacob Bale found it necessary to back to the ‘Old Country’ (Germany) for grindstones for his mill. He was gone six, eight, ten, eleven months. Folks began to say he was gone for good. But, his second-sighted wife met all their sallies (and offers of marriage) with; ‘No, Jake’ll be back. He’ll come.’ Google-eyed, the neighborhood came to her invitin’ in on the last day of the twelfth month. They were all seated at the high-noon feast when the door opens and in walks Jake. ‘You’ve been sick, Jake’, says she before he could speak. ‘Yes wife, sick and like to die’, says Jake - and pale enough he looked. ‘I a-knowed it, I a-knowed it, I a-knowed it’, says she, three times, a-fingerin’ her witch-charm. And from then on she was skittered around, one of them thar hard women, with powers."

Mary Lewis and her sister, Jane, each married Bale twins, Abraham and John. Menard and Mason Co. Pioneers, by T.G. Onstat, relates the preaching abilities of Abraham Bale: "Abraham was considered a great preacher. Tall, well formed, with a powerful constitution and a voice like a lion, he would wake natives for a half mile ‘round. He held wonderful revivals all over the county and baptized converts in the River Sangamon. Abraham had a habit when preaching of grasping his left ear with his hand and leaning over as far as he could and lowering his voice. He would commence to straighten up and his voice would raise to a high key. He would pound the Bible with his fist and stamp the floor, and carry everything before him."

Jacob Bales added an ‘s’ to his surname and this was carried down through a number of his descendants. He and his wife, Sally, lived in the area of Baleville and Augusta, N.J. He later moved his family near his sister in Cayuta, N.Y. He had a stump-puller and once pulled a barge out of Seneca Lake. Both Jacob and Sally contracted malaria, so they and their older sons moved back to N.J. and left the younger children with his sister. Sally was the daughter of Samuel and Hannah (Lundy) Shotwell. The Shotwell genealogy has been traced back to King Egbert and Queen Rudbega, called the first king and queen of England. The Lundy family is well known in Quaker history.

FOURTH GENERATION

1-5-1

Hardin Bale, a natural machinist, ran the carding mill in New Salem, IL as early as 1836 and moved his machine to Petersburg, IL in 1841. The Pioneers of Menard and Mason Counties (IL) tells us that Hardin’s carding machine in Petersburg was the busiest place in town. It was a large two-story building and fronted on Main Street for 150 feet. Hardin was paid either in cash or in wool. His mill had the ability to card, spin, weave, fill, color, and shear the wool, producing a good article of broadcloth. A steam engine was soon added to the business. However, the factory was consumed by fire with not much insurance, the first of three mills destroyed by fire over 15 years. Hardin moved up to the South Valley area, but failed to prosper. He then started for Pike’s Peak with machinery to work for gold, but before he got there, he met hundreds of teams returning. He turned back and, as he was crossing the river at Beardstown, his machinery was sunk. Certainly a man of indomitable courge, Hardin built a third woolen factory. This he finally had to lease when he became incapacipated by a fall that caused his death in 1879. Less than three years later, this mill also burned.
