Word-by-word Problem Solving

Even if your kid is a math whiz, chances are he or she still hates word problems. Why? Because in word problems, you have to figure out the equation before you can calculate the answer. This means you have to know how to translate the words into numbers and symbols. For example, "If you're at the mall and your mom gives you $10 to split evenly with your sister, how much money do you have left?" To find the answer, you must first understand that "split evenly" means "divide by 2." Only after realizing this can you find the answer, which is $5. This week's learning activity shows you and your child how to conquer word problems by making up your own.

For detailed instructions on how to perform this activity, check out the SCORE! Learning Activity Center.
