JULY 2002
The great psychologist, Abraham Maslow, identified five basic human needs that every person experiences in varying degrees. The first four are physical, safety, social and self-esteem needs. But at the top of the ladder he lists what he calls: “self-actualization ” needs. We can call it “spiritual needs.”where Mind, Body and Spirit function in harmony. This is the need we all have to develop our potential to its maximum, to be all that we can be. No matter how much we accomplish there is still the inner urge to reach higher, to do what we have never done before, often in a new field, totally different from our present occupation. This explains why successful people sometimes change careers in mid-life and embark on a whole new endeavour in life. The feeling is a combination of exhilaration and fear.
Why do people take such risks? Because of their need for self-actualization. This is a spiritual need, which means it emanates from the mind and heart of the Universe. The great thinker, Ernest Holmes called it “the creative urge within us.” He also said that if we gave in to this urge and allowed ourselves to be more completely expressed, we would never be unhealthy or unhappy in Mind,Body or Spirit. Here is a major key to the healing of all our mental and physical problems.
In our “projections” we must be careful not to focus only on the lower needs of Maslow’s Triangle but also on the apex or top which is Self-Actualization”.
MIND SCIENCE ASSOCIATION OF MALAYSIA
“Change your Thinking,
Change your Life”
In 1993 more than 200 religious leaders, representing more than 100 of the world’s religious, met in Chicago to explore common ground. Their statement was to
address the staggering problems of humanity around the globe. Historically, religion has always been part of the problem, not solution. They openly admitted this deplorable fact in their final statement and resolved to do better. Amazingly, they did considerably better, per their statement: “We take individual responsibility for all we do. All our decisions, actions, and failures to act have consequences.” This is a clear statement of cause and effect. By the close of the conference these religious leaders had put together a ten-page document on which they all unconditionally agreed. It was based solidly on what we call the Golden Rule.
How simple and yet how profound! The Golden Rule is to be found clearly expressed in many of the religion of the world, including Islam, Taoism, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism and Christianity. The Parliament stated it thusly: “What you do not wish done to yourself, do not do to others. What you wish done to yourself, do to others!”. In Mind Science we call this the law of cause and effect, because what we do unto others will, indeed be done unto us. This law applies, not only to nations, races, and religions, but to each person. World peace begins one person at a time. It begins with you; it begins with me.
Today I give only my best to everyone I meet. I expect and accept only the best from every person I meet.
PART
II -DISCUSSION
1)
Why do successful
people
change careers in mid-life?
2)
Why is
self-actualisation called a “spiritual” need?
3)
What underlying Mind
Science law was the cause of the problems the religious leaders were trying to
solve?
4)
To what category of
persons does the Golden rule apply to?
PART III – REFLECTION
(Get to your levels and
listen to the facilitator)
Facilitator: (read slowly)
Take a deep
breath…….Exhale (3X). With eyes closed,
let us examine ourselves and project onto our mental screen Maslow’s triangle
of needs.
There are basically 2
stages in the triangle namely the bottom 4 physical and psychological stages
and the top-most one which is spiritual.
(Pause)
Let us examine ourselves
and see into which stage of the triangle we fit into. (Pause)
Are all our desires and
daily projections only on the physical steps of basic needs, self-esteem and
wealth? (Pause)
Or do we feel the need
for something more lasting and which brings joy and peace. (Pause)
Let us now reflect on the
Golden rule of all religions, namely “What you wish done to yourself, do to
others” (Pause)
This is a universal law
of Mind Science. It applies not only to
nations and religions but to each of us.
Do I practise this law in
my daily life. (Pause)
Take a deep
breath……..Exhale (2X)
Now come out of your
levels. Flip your fingers, open your
eyes, feeling fine and perfect.
