PART 1 –READING
: ACTIVE AND PASSIVE MEDITATION
There
are basically two schools of practice in Mental Relaxation or
Meditation. During the Mind Science Course we are told that our type of
meditation is ACTIVE or DYNAMIC as opposed to the PASSIVE type practiced mainly
by Buddhists and some forms of Hindu and Yoga groups.
Both
types are basically good and beneficial. Do not get into argument on which is
better or right. No one type is better or superior to the other - only the
approach is different. Both schools have a lot in common . Both systems
believe in getting to a relaxed and peaceful state of Mind where Spirit, Mind
and Body function in harmony. Both methods result in definite benefits for our
mind, emotions, body chemistry and spirit. The benefits derived are almost
similar - namely, our health improves, we become more holistic in outlook and
everything in life works for the better. Both types believe in “going with
the flow ” which means letting the
Cosmic Power guide them for what is best in life.
The
major basic difference is in what we call “projecting” . In passive
meditation, there is no “projecting” or “programming” of the Mind for what we
want in life like we do in Mind Science. Desire is looked upon as something
negative and unhealthy for spiritual progress. They believe that “Desire”
is the beginning of all greed and evil;
get rid of all desires and you cut off a major source of life’s problems.
Strictly speaking, wanting to have no desires is also a desire.
Passive
meditators strongly believe in ‘going with the flow’. They only have to
keep ‘in tune’ with the Cosmic Power and everything else flows or happens as a
consequence of this connection. This Creative Power knows what is best for them
and therefore there is no need to ask, pray or ‘project’ for what we need or
desire.
Basically
there is nothing wrong with this belief as far as Mind Science is concerned. We
respect their point of view. We too , certainly believe in being ‘in tune’ and
‘going with the flow’ but we believe that a little human effort is necessary
for anything to happen in life. Belief alone without action or planning may not
necessarily give us what we need. The Cosmic Power has given us a brain and
mind to use in achieving our true potentials. We cannot simply have a blind
faith and hope everything in life will turn out to our expectation. It is like
saying I trust the Cosmic Power will make me a university graduate without my
going to school or college. I must use my brain to study and use my mind to
plan what course to take and how to fund my studies.
Passive
meditation is suitable for people who are “full-time” on meditation with no worry or concern for
things of the world; food, clothing and shelter are already provided and there
are no specific material goals except spiritual ones.
All of us live in a material world and have to
look after not only our spiritual needs but also our material and psychological
needs. In this sense it is more difficult to practise active meditation – to live in the world and yet
not be controlled by it.
So,
do we distrust the Cosmic Power by “projecting” for what we want or desire?.
No. In fact we are making the Creative
Power use us to achieve what we desire as long as it is for our good and the
good of the Universe. We become co-creators of the world around us. Our thoughts become the medium through which
this process takes place. We become what we think through the creative energy
of the Universe manifesting itself in and through our ‘projections”.
As someone once said, “God knows what we
need even before we pray for it but for some mysterious reason He waits for us
to ask for it before giving it to us.”
Note:
Avoid
getting into arguments with those who practise Passive meditation on which
system is better. Respect their choice and share the benefits common to both
systems.

PART 2 - DISCUSSION
1. Which school of
meditation does
Mind Science belong to ?
Is it better than the other school?
2.What have the two schools
in common?
3.What is the basic
difference between the two schools of meditation?
4.For those living in the
world, which school is the preferred choice and why?
5.By “projecting” are we
partly distrusting the Cosmic Power which should know what is good for us?
Discuss.
PART
3 – REFLECTION
Some
affirmations to re-programme our subconscious Mind on the Reading and
Discussion.
Leader:
Sit
in a comfortable position/ close your eyes.
Take
a deep breath ….. Exhale ( 3 x )
Let
us now think of some of the important points that impressed us during the
Reading and Discussion just held . (Pause 15 secs.)
The
following affirmations are going to make us realize the true nature of
meditation.
“I am always attuned to the creative source of
life which makes all good things happen in my life.”
( 2 times, slowly )
“I
am always filled with this creative energy which transforms my thoughts and desires
into reality in my life.” ( 2x, slowly))
Whenever
I “project” for my goals in life, I am a Co-creator with the Cosmic Creator of
the Universe.”
( 2x, slowly )
Get
ready to come out of our levels.
Take
deep breath …. Exhale ( 2x )
ACTION FOR THE MONTH
Let us keep in mind that whenever we “project” for
anything, we are actually becoming co-creators with Cosmic Power. Whenever we
tend to doubt our projections or goals let us affirm our trust in the Universal
Power with this affirmation:
“I know and
believe I am now co-creating my life
with the help of the Universal Creator.”
