A very good point, I seem to have missed that out altogether.
The prices are in Canadian dollars and oue wonderful Customs and Excise people
steal their cut as well.
Assuming the exchange rates have not changed much, I'll have to look them up
again, inclucing postage and taxw ould be around the £40 mark. That would be
for a single copy, for a bulk order it should be lower.
It will depend on how many are interested, but I got an email from the author
who seems quite agreeable to the idea of a reduced rate for a one off multiple
order.

I have not had anything from the CU list since yesterday evening.
It often seems to go down at weekends or holiday periods :-(
Unless someone decides to go into the CU Offices I suppose it will be Tuesday

Talking of lists. Who's on the K56flex ml? I got what looked like a

While I'm about it. Can anyone recall what causes Miami to come up with the

If that`s the case, just leave at the default LHA, that way you`ll at least ge

I use Parnet between the paralell ports. You need a special cable for this
but the details on re-wiring one are included in the Parnet archive.
I have Parnet installed as Amiga1 on my main machine and use a bootable floppy
set up as Amiga2 for any other Amiga I want to connect.

I've used Sernet and Parnet in the past and I have to say that using the Par
port is far less painful :)
Software used was Parbench and I bought the cable 'cos I wouldn't make my own

I also haven't had any mail, and yesterday the mlstatus.html file said it was

Yep, I expect so. IIRC, sometime last year, the cleaners turned everything off

Do you know what revision 060 you've got ? I'm considering clocking to 66MHz
(if I can find a crystal) and I've heard some 060 revisions don't like it,
whilst others are OK. I'm using a Revision 5 68060. Also have you got a fan

I am. Personally speaking, I'd never go back. I had shit loads of hassle with
my tower supplier, and it took over 3 months to get it sorted, but I'm very
pleased I stuck with it. It does truely transform the machine, and the P96 RTG
software is excellent, and the support from the mailing list is brilliant.
> I'm currently running Blizzard 1230 IV 050, 32mb, 17" Microvitec.
I updated to an 060 at the sametime, but that isn't important. And I've only
got a 14" monitor, which I run in 800x600 for everything. If you can afford
it, I'm positive you wouldn't regret it.
> I'm mostly interested in improving web browsing and Doom!
Can't speak for doom, but web browsing is totally transformed. The scrolling
is one area that knocked me for six, its sooo fast and smooth. Its hard to say
how much difference it would make now that the main browsers use FastRAM for
image caching, but that was one area that was a big boost for me. Also with
the advent of the Ateo (?) and BVision, its a tricky time to choose.
Personal opinion, if you've got the cash go for it, but you might like some
wider views :)

Subject: HTML
Hi all,
I'm trying to do my Website "properly" in that I want to use the correct HTML
syntax etc. Now this isn't made very easy by the fact that a) Netscape
introuced the Frames tags, b) W3 introduced Frames into HTML4 and then changed
it, and c) none of the amiga browsers use HTML4 yet !
However, I've decided to do everything that I can correctly, use the Netscape
Frames syntax until iBrowse/V-NG support HTML4, and then submit the site for
HTML4 clearance after.
But the bit I'm confused with, is the DOCTYPE lines. Now as my site uses
frames, I should use the HTML4 DOCTYPE Frames. But do I only use this on those
with FRAMESET information, eg the index.html, and then the Transitional
DOCTYPE for each "page", or do I use the Frames DOCTYPE on everypage as the
site is frames based ? Does the DOCTYPE line go on EVERY page on the site, or
just on the index.html ?
Also, can anyone suggest some additional HTML tools to use. I don't want any
WYSIWG editors, CEd is fine, and I'm using CheckHTML to check bits. I remember
talking to Ego about HCS/HSC ? What was that used for ? I'm going to download
it in a sec, but wondered if anyone else has any good utilities they could
suggest. I might even add a Amiga HTML Authoring Tools page if I use some good
ones :)
Many TIA.

The doctype should ideally be specified for each document, rather than just
the index of a directory.

I just use CEd and a browser. However, I'd recommend going and signing up (free)
to www.mcp.com, Virtual Bookshelf by Macmillian Publishing. They have the full

Cost is under a fiver. Do not worry that it may look bigger than the one you
already have, the Blizzard boards have the pin arrangements for both.

I do not have a fan, but left the trapdoor off. The 68060 gets hot, but

Well I doubt it will make a huge difference to Doom, which is 256 colours
anyway and is slowed down by a lot of other things rather than the graphics
conversion. Won't hurt though.
For web browsing it could make life quite a bit more pleasant. Speed,
memory, looks should all be improved.
What you really have to ask yourself is do you want to spend £400 upgrading
your current Amiga now or buy a new Amiga in a couple of months. Its never
an easy call.
You might want to hold back till WOA where they should be announcing the
price of the BoXeR motherboard. Apparently one of its components has just
fallen in price.

It will be a long time before Amiga browsers are fully HTML4 complient.
Then there's XML...
Also while HTML4 makes certain earlier tags illegal, lets face it
no browser is actually going to drop them.
HTML 3.2 is a perfectly good standard to work to and should display just
fine in all half decent browsers.

DOCTYPE should be on each page so that the checking software knows which
spec the page conforms to.
So if a page is HTML 4 complient use that doctype.
After all if your site is set up properly then those who can't read frames
should still be able to navigate, if somewhat more awkwardly.

I have to admit that none of my websites are fully HTML complient.
Basically because I can't be arsed checking with the increasingly fussy and
inconsistent HTML standards. Its a hobby not a punishment. ;)
CheckHTML is pretty thorough though if you are prepared to wade through all
the tiny errors it fusses about.
Beyond that I mainly use just a plain text editor and I don't even bother
checking in more than one browser. Which is lazy granted. :)
HSC is a great tool if you can organise your page creation. Amongst other
things it will allow you to insert standard bits of code into multiple
pages. So if you had, for example, a navigation bar that was on all pages
you would create it in one text file and then put a short insertion code in
the others. Then when you wanted to change it you would only have to
change the original text file, not the other 50 pages. :)
It does lots of other cool stuff too.
But the Amiga is totally lacking a comprehensive site management tool.
Perhaps someone will be able to gather enough individual utilities together
to create one.

There are a number of reasons for the existence of the stats.
1) I had already written software that could do it for another list.
2) I've found in the past that it can encourage people to post to a list.
3) Its a by product of the main function of my software which is to create
a list digest.
That digest is now on the Amiga Chatter web site at
https://members.tripod.com/~amiga_chatter
Alongside information about this list and joining instructions. I want to
add loads of links to the site too, so if anyone has Amiga info on their
web pages and wants a link let me know.
Once I've got the page a little more organised I'll submit it to AWD which
should get us some wider attention.
So the stats are likely to stay unless people objected to them strongly. :)

Subject: Amiga Company Structure
Hi :)
I think it was vader who mentioned a while ago that it was hard to figure
out how the various people in the Amiga companies fit together. What
follows is my best effort at connecting them up, but I can't guarantee its
100% correct
TED WAITT - The guy right at the top, in charge of GW2K
GW2K allocates a budget to the two Amiga companies Amiga Int and Amiga Inc.
Once that budget is allocated the Amiga twins are on their own, unless they
have to beg for more money or something. The Amiga companies are intended
to be independant subsiaries of GW2K.
AMIGA INTERNATIONAL is a sales and marketing company run by Petro. As far
as Amiga Int is concerned, Petro has the final say. Unless GW2K choose to
replace him. Currently it is also up to Petro who gets a license. In
other words, who can put "Powered By Amiga" on their machines. Amiga Int
is a small company and while there are other people there, we rarely if
ever here from them.
AMIGA INC is the R&D side of things. That work will be done under the
auspices of JOE TORRE who is their hardware guy, and no doubt some
other people further down the track
JEFF SCHINDLER runs Amiga Inc. He was hand picked by Ted Waitt for that
role and is thus the single most important person in the entire Amiga
structure. GW2K sees Jeff as someone who looks to the future. He
currently has a 5 year business plan for Amiga.
Making things that little more confusing, it is my understanding that as
things develop, Amiga Inc will take part of the responisbility for
licensing by testing all software and hardware that wishes to have the
"Powered By Amiga" logo. This suggests that Amiga Inc is the senior
company and Amiga Int, the junior.
DARRECK LYLE also works for Amiga Inc he is basically their PR person.
Since he and Petro are doing similar jobs but from a different perspective
there may well be times when the information they give out doesn't match.
The fourth group in this complicated web is the people contracted to
develope OS3.5.
OLAF BARTHEL
FLEECY MOSS
ALAIN PENDERS
There are almost certainly others but those are the key figures. They
answer to Amiga Inc only. Petro has absolutely no say on the R&D side at
all.
Hope that makes some sense.

Yeah thats what I'm fearing. Although I read today that AWeb is HTML4
compliant ? Anyone know for sure ?

... And that would be :)

It only makes about 4 tags obsolete, and about 20 are suggested not to be
used. Plus every tag to do with appearance, eg. FONT etc, as they are covered
by Style Sheets now :-/

Yeah, I think I might forget it anyway. I didn't want to use 3.2 as I'm using
Frames, but as the HTML4 defination of Frames is /slightly/ different to
Netscapes, if I use HTML4, iBrowse and Co. doesn't display it properly !
Oh sod it, I'll leave it as it is ;^)

Okey dokey. Thanks to all that replied.

Not yet it isn't :)

I'd like to do it properly, but until I can, I'll leave it as it is. If/when
we get fully HTML4 compliant browsers on the Amiga, I might change it.

hehehe, yes does through a few up doesn't it :)
> Beyond that I mainly use just a plain text editor and I don't even bother

Well I have VNG and iBrowse set identically (font wise) and they still display
it quite differently, as in iB isn't the same size font in VNG, etc.

Yeah I've spent sometime reading through it all today, and it does some really
great things. But I couldn't really get my head around it all, so gave in. If
I spend all my time trying to get the program setup, and the pages to be
compliant when I can't even view them, I'll never do any work on the actual
content !
BTW, anyone here know about yet another browser being worked on ? Allan
"texteditor.mcc" Odgaard has decided to write one from what I understand !

I just use BED, Voyager and PPaint. I've never needed more. All this
fuss about new versions of HTML just go stright over my head I'm
afraid, I just use the tags that I learn about from other peoples
pages, so if they use it and I can see it then it must be a supported
tag (I think).

That's the way I work too and so far I have had no problems. Checkers are
very anal about html and as long as there are no major flaws in my code I
tend to ignore their error messages :)

Same here, Ced, DPaint & PPaint. Have to say I check in IBrowse & Voyager
(Voyager still sux a bit IMHO, and I regged it) as well as NS & IE when I
can grab someone on IRC to visit my site :)

You can stick mine on too :)
How many have joined the FCI webring? I'll add mine once I get the GFX
done. FCI's logo is soooo boring so I'm afraid the GFX will not be that
good. I can't do too much with it as FCI would not like it if I did.

If you are interested i've got a parnet cable and network 2 cd from Wierd

Subject: (Fwd) Amiga Portable Digital Assistant
I ran across this message on comp.sys.amiga.games. I think this is a
great idea and I have allready sent off my responce. Now I wonder if
Amiga int/inc could help out?
=== BEGIN FORWARDED MESSAGE ===
Due to recent hardware developments it's now possible to design and
build a PDA running the amiga operating system.
As we all know the Amiga OS is very suitable for PDA's due to its small
size and low hardware requirements.
This PDA will run at about the same speed as a standard A1200, which
should be sufficient. After all, you wont be raytracing on a PDA :)
It will have a grayscale display at a resolution of about 640*200.
There will be a choice of 4, 8 or 16 mbytes of memory.
Most existing amiga programs will run on it. Software that bangs the
amiga hardware wont run since the PDA wont contain the amiga custom
chips.
It will at least have a PCMCIA port and a serialport.
Before we start to design this we need to know if there is a market for
it out there so please answer these questions.
1. Do you want a Amiga PDA?
2. How much would you be willing to pay? ( be realistic)
3. If you own a company would you be interested in investing in this
product? ( we will need funds )
4. Any comments?
Please send your reply to e96pega@mh1.hh.se and don't post it in the
newsgroup.
Thanks for your time.

Typical weeknite is anywhere from 3 to 4AM up to the 7AM "S**t,
I've /got/ to get to sleep NOW!"
Weekend nites depend on how the day has gone. Friday and Saturday
nites I tend to get settled in only after truly getting tired.
Could be up till only 4 AM, have gone as "late" as 7 or 8 or more
until zoning out.
Best cable TV and online time is in the wee small hours...

Yup, I'd like some ideas too. I also suffer from the "Crap @ DIY Syndrome"
so the Power Tower looks like the best option to me.
Yeah, I know I've been here before but having added another HD to my poor old

Right - I've done a DIY job recently, and I don't recommend it.
A £45 full tower (without PSU but I had one already) from Msquared (same
case is now £40) and after a lot of hacksawing and drilling it's now
sitting under my desk. I copied the Eyetech idea of mounting the
motherboard in such a way that a PC board can fit as well in the unlikely
event that I get a Siamese system. I haven't got round to extending the
ports out to the back yet (other than the PortJunior). When it's finally
done I reckon it won't be much cheaper than a commercial job, but I'm a bit
of a masochist.
Personal preferences:
Eyetech (because of the Siamese possibility, and slide-out board cradle).
Power Tower (looks very pretty - very funky lights!)
Personal no-no:
Blittersoft Tower (plastic - yuk!)

If the CU mailing list goes down, it usually because either
a) 'Bitch', our infamous A4000T that runs the list, has crashed or is

b) our mail server is down.
This time it was b) - although it seems to be working now. This is the first

Well congrats on getting it done :)
I have to say that the very thought of doing it that way makes my blood run
cold ! I don't have any need for Siamese just yet and besides I already have
a PC here so I wouldn't need the extra space to mount another one in the case.

Yup, I have to agree here and TBH the operation of removing the 1200 from it's
casing and re-mounting it in the new one does'nt sound /too/ bad :)

I had similar probs fitting my Blizzard but stumbled on a very easy solution.
Line up the card and use a wide paint scraper (yup thats right) against the
lip of the plastic casing over the terminals to push it on. This exerts a
nice even pressure over the full width of the connector and it slots in nicely
:)
I've used this method more than once, much to the amusement of anyone in the
room at the time. You should have seen the look I got from a mate when I asked
him for a paint scraper whilst fitting him RAM expansion board for him :)))

Someone must have used a similar method on my son's 1200. I bought
him a Blizzard 1230 IV at the weekend, fiitted it, no joy.
Dismantled to find gouge mark on M/Board severing five tracks to
expansion port. Eventually fixed with electrical silver paint and
lots of patience.
Back on thread I did a DIY tower (2000) recomended for O-level
metalworkers only.

He he, It nearly gave me a heart attack - they have my pre-order for Quake you
know! I got their email saying Bad news from ClickBoom. Oh no another Amiga
developer gone bust - aaarrrggghhh!
I checked the site at work today, it looked bad, next page looked not quite
right, by the third it was obviously a bl**dy advert for their new C&C
type game.
The gits! At least there was also news that ID had approved Quake and it is on

Such advertising obviously works but it as a bit much too excitement for those

Sort of. You need to make sure you have the 'ISO9660 File Access' file
and the 'Foreign File Access' extensions in your System Folder:extensions

Yep, I currently use the backup to file option too. I thought that would be
my backup problems over but I never figured on the *domino* effect that
seems to happen when one partition goes down! Curse those hard errors. ;)
Hopefully CDRW will both guarantee data security and give me back some HD

Sure am. After forking out for a SCSI lead, 15 CDR disks, 2 CDRW disks,
MasterISO and AsimCDFS there's no going back now! I'm gagging for a play on
it TBH and the wait is killing me. All my plans (Fusion, Backups etc) hinge
on it. I'm also considering getting a Cyberstorm SCSI interface (if one
will fit inside an A3000T) because I'm concerned that all my SCSI devices
are sharing the same interface and so data flow when writing to CDR/W might
be interrupted enough to cause buffer under-runs (basically means your CDR
disk becomes a toaster!).

Hmmm I know it sounds like a broken record but, go for as much as you can
afford ! Adding large buffers to the HD you are running SS from is a must
unless you plan to wait 20 mins for it to load :(

So I phoned support, and the bloke couldn't help, even after we went
through all the settings in Miami, he had heard of it but didn't have one

His solution when he realised that I had another account that used Miami

Thought I would try again, and guess what it suddenly works, weird....

Hehe, I got the same thing with BT. There's no dial tone so I call 'em on the
mobile and ask 'em to check it. A couple of lights flash on the modem as they
run a signal down the line and then they say, "No sir, your line is fine"
Sounds very similar don't it ?
Cheers,

You must be kidding. Doom was fun for a while, sort of up to Breathless but
without the up and down bits.
The Quake demo kicks serious ass, I want to play it now even without Gfx card.

The last news apart from CB #going bust# was that ID had approved Amiga Quake
and as soon as the CDs are pressed we will get them :-)

When the demo was released my hard drive wasn't big enough (I
upgraded on the weekend) and I don't have an FPU anyway so I installed
it on the PC at work, with UAE. Kind of poinless I know, I can play
WinQuake very nicely on that machine but I just had to see the Amiga
version running (I use the word *running* loosley).

Hi Taz
Was probably me , I rang ( rung ) support earlier on with the same problem
( and response ) but was asked if I was using windows95 , I said an Amiga
and that was him f***** , eventually contacted Neil Bothwick
(this was the X2 line , yes) and he said that the '120 line was tempr???
er....touchy and advised using the '0798112 No , which worked OK ,
rerang support and informed them that there was a problem with the
'120 No and was told to try the K56 No , which worked , albeit at 33.6
as with the '112 No , so I'll reenable the X2 No in Miami and give it a
large
portion of Amiga Power ;-) .
No go at 10.55pm.........

I don't know about Shapeshifter but if you can afford 32Mb ram I would
suggest going for it. You can never have too much ram (or hard drive
space, or CPU power etc.). I upgraded from 8 to 16 just a few weeks
ago and its turned my Amiga into a totaly new machine, I never knew
Amiga computing could be this good!

Ask them how fast the memory is, 60 ns ram is ideal. If your a bit
worried about the ram not working with your machine ask them if you
can return the ram, even though it might still work on one of their
PCs. You can never be too careful with ram, I know someone who bought
ram for his A1200 and it didn't work, and he couldn't get a refund as
the ram wasn't faulty. He sold the ram to a PC owner and got his money
back, but I think he was very lucky.

Really? I've bought a PortJunior, 4 way IDE and EZdf0 from them and any
problems I had were sorted by them straight away (ie it was my fault). The
only difficulty I actually had with them was trying to get through to their
technical support.

Just like HDs, always go for as much as you can afford, 'cos you'll find
yourself running out eventually!

A few months ago I bought a 32mb EDO simm for £42 (I think) at an All
Formats fair. Works fine in my Blizzard. Make sure your board will take
double-sided simms. I suspect that EDO simms are 60ns - but anyway if you
look at the serial number on the ram chips you should see a 60 near the end.
Baldrick says something about checking that EDO works in your board - I
always thought that EDO was simply ignored in Amiga boards, but I bow to
his superior wossname.
Right, let's have a look in the Msquared PC catalogue... 32mb £38 inc vat.

Well at a big push I could afford the 32meg of ram, but thats really
pushing it,(cause Resident Evil 2 is due soon! and I doubt Rachel will be
too pleased if I spend all the spare cash on my toys;-) )

Well I was thinking of getting it from First Computing in Leeds, since I
have bought most of my extras of them in the past.

Some how I think I will need a lot of luck, if the last attempt was
anything to go buy :-)

Subject: AF is killing the Amiga!!
Hi,
Got AF today and next month it is giving away ANOTHER free game -
F1GP. I wouldn't mind if it was an old game which you cant get no more
or a game such as putty squad or pizza tycoon which was finished but
never released, but NOT a game which at the moment is in the shops.
As a result less copies of UFO and F1GP will be sold which will force
Amiga retailers out of business and encourage more shops to stop
selling amiga products.
what are your views on the matter?

Too true, pretty poor support, whats the use of 24hr support when they give
you crap advise as "let your Amiga sleep on it".
Well I have to say in their defense that its the first major problem I have
had with them.

Yep I use the X2 line, wonder why they never told me to try the other
number, or mention that they had been informed that there was a problem on
that number. Its more annoying since it was obviously the same person you
spoke to that I did.
Still it worked this morning, wonder if I can send this mail :-)
